Back in the post-Vietnam, post-draft days, when the us.mil would promote a duffel bag with enough time in grade and time in service because anybody with more than two brain cells either popped smoke immediately or had nowhere else to go, many of them remained until retirement in the late 70's and early 80's.
Because they were just smart enough to realize that they had been handed the best deal they were ever going to get in their lives and all they had to do to guarentee three hots, a cot and a paycheck was to follow orders and not fuck up. So they stayed in, and the system just kept promoting them.
At basic airborne school at Ft. Benning in 1979, I had a black SGM that was barely understandable, because he could barely string words in english together in a sentence. I never understood a single word that came out of his mouth, but he was very loud, enthusiastic and emphatic about whatever-the-fuck he was saying.
Imagine Forrest Gump's drill sergeant, but gargling a mouthful of marbles.
But his brass gleamed, and his starched uniforms had razor creases, and his jump boots had a mirror spit shine every day, so he was still there until he retired.
It seems conscription should boost the market organ and blood supplies. Most of them will join because they think being harvested by parasites "gives their life meaning".
