Short answer: we don't know.

Interesting history: Crimea was its own little Soviet Socialist Republic from 1921 until 1945, then part of the Russian one until 1954, when Khrushchev meddled.

On a personal note, Alfred, Lord Tennyson's poem, The Charge of the Light Brigade was popular when I was a child. But now I'm grown up, nobody in the UK seems to remember that Crimea was part of Russia, back when Britain and France invaded Russia to help the Ottoman Empire. I don't get how "Crimea was part of Russia" has disappearred down the memory hole, when there was a catchy poem to anchor the memory. Normal people seem weirdly trapped in an eternal present of what the TV just told them.

The answer is because nobody expected the Soviet Union to collapse. Ukraine was a “state” under the government authority of the USSR. “Giving crimea to Ukraine” made sense as a governing structure and because Ukraine was a “state” nobody expected the USSR to collapse.

It’s not complicated it’s like asking why did America make California a state? Nobody is expecting California to secede from the Union.

Krushev was also born in Ukraine and had strong feelings regarding the region.

Crimea and area was forfeited by the Turks in mid 1770s in a deal orchestrated by Grigory Potemkin, Kyiv Ukraine was the actual heart of the Russian Empire, it's been bounced around by Poland, Lithuania, the Mongols but it's the Khazars who did the damage known today...but the Scythians and Varangians are mainly the ones who dominated the land of that region prior BCE/BRONZE AGE...more than likely the wheel was purposed in that region too...the fact that Khrushchev gave Ukraine recognition as a sovereign territory (under (((Soviet))) rule) doesn't even make sense (from the stories of my family), but then again, anything a jew does is confusing.

One theory I've heard is that it was to saddle Ukraine with a Russian population.

But if you want to go not too much further back in history, Russia invaded and annexed Crimea in the first place, ethnically cleansing the population that was there, and immigrating Russians in.

Here's why. The soviet union didn't collapse. It retracted back into its strongholds. The Ukraine. Poland. Israel. The us. Many others. The war in Russia is the same kind of civil war we will probably see here.
