That does sound exaggerated. They would only need enough for one page they were currently printing and another few pages that were being typeset while they were printing. Who knows.
Fun fact, the "y" was originally pronounced as a "th" sound. The "y" is a substitute for another previous letter that looked sort of like a "p" and was called thorn. So "ye" is the spelling for what was pronounced "the".
