Why in God's green earth would anyone buy a used EV? Batteries need to be replaced and your shelling out another $20k. I've read they only last 10 or so years. A used ev is a financial time bomb.

Buying a used EV is like buying used underwear. Used gas vehicles are cool though.

I thought it was 20 years? Either way I saw a very old Tesla for sale when browsing used cars and the listing said it had a brand new battery in it. I wonder what else was wrong with it to be selling after spending that much.

I knew a guy who had a battery go bad a little less than 10 years. He donated it for a tax write off. Another factor Ive read is if an ev is involved in an accident, depending on where it was struck they may need a new battery since a damaged cell can cause a fire.

Name one battery that lasts more than 10 years while in use, that has more than 50% of original capacity.

soooo maybe it was 20 years before it completely carcks it? I'm pretty sure the listing was close to a 2010 Tesla, wasn't after 2005.

Everybody knows that. It shows wilful ignorance. Just like the shots. Let them eat their own.

NEW EV market will crater!

The product never had demand, it was forced upon us. EV trucks? Who the fuck would waste their money on that useless shit?

I think it’s going to be a DIY bonanza. If you can open up the battery packs and test the individual cells and replace the defective ones (with reasonably priced replacement cells,) you’d be up and running with a descent priced used EV. I might even do some research, see if I can acquire and refurbish an EV battery at my leasure, then scoop up a way undervalued used EV, swap out my battery, and be up and running. Then get to work on the old battery and either sell it, or save it as an eventual replacement.

Supposedly there are approximately 7000 18650s that make up the Tesla battery. How much time and energy would it take to to test every cell?

They are probably in large packs of cells. Testing the packs first narrows it down. Unless all the packs are bad. But I’ve played with Insight and Prius packs, usually it only takes a few bad cells before the charging computer starts dialing things back and degrading battery performance. It’s doable .

There's a JT vid of a dealership dude who used to do that all day. He explains in detail how to tear it apart and reassemble in about half an hour in the driveway. The individual aftermarket cells were reasonable priced for the Prius. Wherever there is a problem there is a potential market. Let the sheep get eaten.

China already has massive yards full of EVs with aged out batteries. If I recall some are not even used, they are new old stock that can’t be sold because the batteries are degraded with zero miles on the vehicles.

This also applies to battery packs for hybrids. Most sites are claiming 2,000 to 8,000 USD but the real price is closer to $10,000. What happens when your Honda or Toyota whatever at 10 years old is worth only $5,000?
