Duck eggs are back on the menu!

87.6 grams, 2.5 x 2 inches. Ducks molt over the winter and lay fewer eggs. Not enough to make it to my closest farmers market, but they're back now.

This was the largest in the dozen large eggs, which go for $15. It's only $12 for the smaller duck eggs. Anyway, pretty tasty. Give them a try if you can get them.

I wish we could get an image host for this site that would work 90% of the time and not suggest I look at porn.

have you tried using an adblocker?

Not scrolling down to 'suggested' works. I'm not seeing a way to block everything but the linked photo.

You can always use the /img/ url. Unfortunately it is a free speech site so people are going to post what they are going to post, plus I consider any alg shenanigans to boost or unboost things off limits to myself. But there is an option to link to an /i/ that has the image plus suggestions or /img/ that is just the image. Whatever works for people.

i hear they're great for brownies, etc. something not quite right about steak and duck eggs for breakfast though.

They work pretty well with bacon. Should go well with steak too. This covers everything you'd want to know.

I pay like $6/dozen for my buddy's duck eggs and I can confirm that they are huge and delicious.

It is my experience that men love the taste of duck eggs, but women can't stand them.
Anyone else here notice this trend?

Are ducks considerably more messy than chickens?

[ - ] ItsOk2bArian 3 points 1 weekApr 18, 2024 18:10:45 ago (+3/-0)

Yes. My buddy has free range chickens and ducks. The ducks are high maintenance and make a lot more mess. Especially since you have to maintain a pond of some sort for them. The water gets nasty fast. He uses it for watering his garden due to high nitrogen content, but still needs to flush out the entire pond regularly.
Ducks are funnier than chickens though, they have personality that chickens don't

"Even though chickens like to dig dust-bathing holes in the yard, they're overall tidier than ducks in the coop. Ducks love to splash water around on the duck house floor and have naturally higher water content in their waste, while chickens are comparatively cleaner."

The internet answer, since I have no ducks of my own. Seems to be the general consensus though. I think that's partly why there aren't large scale duck operations like there are with chickens.

2 domestic duck eggs of large size will keep you going all day unil dinner...domestic duck is actually an offshoot of the mallard duck...just an FYI...mallard ducks have their origins in the Orient....I'll take duck over turkey or chicken any day.

Do you have ducks, and what breed? Roasted duck is amazing too, but I'll have to be content with the eggs.

Yeah, my brother continued the farming tradition, mind you as a hobby only, my father had the big farm but he passed away back in 2013 and with everything I've had going on in my life I just couldn't participate but I grew up with it...but my brother raises quail and pheasant too but most of the fucking pheasants fuck off before we can eat them, they have to be wing clipped, they're a lot of work, as for the " White domestic farm ducks", they too are expensive to raise because they're so fucking stupid, they don't understand danger, a fucking coon, fox, coyote or weasel can walk right up to them and take them down...you have to have a large enclosure with an artificial pond with a concrete subsurface so that varmints can't undermine and breech the enclosure...but back to the duck eggs, an omelet with bacon and onions, (skip the green peppers, they change the taste) and don't burn the bacon and don't overcook the onions, best to use the green onion chive, not the White onion itself and not the solid green chive, use the part in between the onion and the full chive...and DO NOT OVERCOOK THE EGG, A GOOD OMELET HAS TO BE SLIGHLTLY SNOTTY...bacon and onions should be cooked separately, after frying the bacon to medium texture, remove bacon and then fry the chive in the grease but DO NOT OVERCOOK, you don't want a "fried onion" per se, you want to maintain the green/White color and semi raw texture...drain grease but leave just enough to lube the pan...whip the eggs with a teaspoon of butter and equal cream and then dump into the bacon onion mixture and stir it well...I put the heat up high, preheat the pan and then dump the grease and ingredients in and then kill the heat so that it cooks convectionally, after about a half minute flip your omelet and let cook the same on the other side, after which you'll flip it again for about 20seconds and then over again to the other side...under two minutes you'll have the perfect omelet...now this is with an electric range, gas stoves are immediate heat and cook differently so the prep times will differ....FYI...the best omelet comes from quail eggs but it takes 20 - 25 eggs to feed 2 people but the taste is incredible, you'll feel guilty after eating quail eggs because they're so rich in taste....and that's my reply.

Had no green chive, but in the bacon grease and just punctured the yolk. Then flipped once to cook both sides, leaving the center slightly snotty. Split a muffin and lightly buttered, then toasted it in the same pan. Wasn't the worst thing I've ever had.

Quail might be manageable in my small space, but I'm thinking of dividing the wasabi and putting that down there - under the rack for the pepper pots. I give it sun, but they say it does well in full shade.

One of my pekins shit out a few baseballs in a row last month last month.

For those of you who like a fried egg on a burger or a tenderloin, use a duck egg.

[ - ] Sector2 [op] 2 points 1 weekApr 18, 2024 16:15:51 ago (+2/-0)

Pekin ducks are highly sociable and are generally too heavy for flight. Pekin ducks are precocial birds (mature from birth) and therefore make ideal companion animals, and the relationship that can develop can rival that of humans and dogs, if not surrounded by other ducks. They are an intelligent breed of duck.

Nice.

[ - ] ruck_feddit 1 point 1 weekApr 18, 2024 20:49:43 ago (+1/-0)

I would argue the opposite is true concerning their intelligence compared to any other breed of domestic duck. They don't fear/flee predators well, many don't forage well, they aren't broody, and they aren't at the top for egg production. However, Pekins are the the top choice for meat ducks.
