In Wisconsin, those in the rightmost lane are expected to move for those merging on.

Makes sense: you in the right lane knows what's happening in the left and can see the car trying to merge on...adjusting accordingly and all.

I always thought it would be efficient if the right lane was considered the merge lane in areas with active ramps and the left lane as the travel lane. Then resume the left lane being the fast lane after junction. On truly busy roads the left lane isn't the passing lane anyway because there isn't road to spare just to have a lane for passing. The idea of a left passing lane only works on a pretty small number of roads in the more rural parts of the US. So I don't think it would do much harm to re-assign their meaning. Then we could all get on and off like a breeze and in general traffic will be faster.

What's more important, one guy being able to go 5mph faster than everyone else for a short bit or everyone going 15 mile an hour faster safer. Safety is the limiting factor in speed. If you make the roads more safe in one way you can use the excess safety to up the general speed. If people who find themselves able to got left when there is a merge did go left as long as they don't cut anyone off, thus rarifying the right lane, it would make more room for inbound cars and everything would be extremely safe even at very high speeds. And you would have fewer conflicts creating sudden breaking that sends slow down ripples backward.

But nooo. Everyone should crowd the right lane so I can pass someone if I'm going 3mph slower than I want to. This will only happen twice trip but I'm willing to purchase that in exchange for having slowdowns be a norm on every trip.

The left lane isn't and never has been the "fast lane" - this is a misconception. The left lane is supposed to be the PASSING LANE. Where you enter the lane to pass cars traveling slower than you, then return to the right lane. Instead, morons just stay in the left lane all the time.
It works, most of the time. I can understand if you're in a metro area with a shit load of on ramps it would get crowded. But when you're just traveling normally it's fine when used properly.

That does not work for 90% of roads. Traffic will ultimately move slower if half the lanes are mostly unused. Do you want to pass someone every now and again or do you want all of traffic to move faster?

I use the California highway method of entering a highway.

I'm at speed or higher when merging.

If the guy doesn't want to let me in I either dip behind or speed up and merge.

Actually in the last example, people merging DO have the right of way in most of the USA. If you don't allow someone to merge onto a highway, it's your fault when they side swipe you.

Additionally, coming from my grandfather (trucker of 42 years) and my own father (trucker for 8 years), when you're pulling a 100 ton load, you turn your signal on, count to 4, then start merging anyways and people will get the fuck out of the way.

Most drivers these days don't know how to drive. Which is why I can't wait for the self-driving car to become ubiquitous. Then again, most drivers aren't White men these days either.

In my ethnostate, only White men who pass a stringent yearly test would be allowed onto the major roads. Women and minors can have golf carts, scooters, mopeds, etc on the residential roads.

MEANWHILE IN IOWA: they put yield signs at the end of their on ramp...so people sometimes come to a complete stop trying to merge onto the Interstate.

I will always "go, and get over"...especially around the "dancy" trucks. Reduce the chance of accidents by reducing the amount of side-by-side driving.

I had to do the motorcycle pass one early morning on the M5 in Sydney because 2 asshole truckers were driving at 60kms 37mph and I had to get to the airport before rush hour started and instead of it taking 45mins to get there it takes 2hrs depending on who fucks up on the highway that day.
