There is one person I know in particular who keeps doing this, and they just won't stop. It's a situation where I'm this person's only real friend and the only one who can help them with nearly everything in their life - but they keep lying to.............. save face? There is nothing particularly interesting that ever happens in this person's life and they don't really have any face to save, and these lies purely undermine me by misleading me or costing me time or money. Again, there doesn't appear to be a rhyme or reason (that I can tell) for them to tell these lies. Why are they doing this? Is there something I can say or do to make them stop?

Tell them the next time they tell you a retarded lie you're going to punch them in the face.

Then punch them in the face. Lay it out to them directly that their dishonesty is insulting to you, and that they need to alter that behavior, and you are going to help them or they are going to fear interacting with you.

That or drop them and let them suffer.

In my life I'm surrounded by 3 liars that I cannot avoid (family, work etc) they all lie for different reasons:

Histrionics - lies for
attention/control. Pain 5/10. (Everybody knows, no one understands, ignore it)

Narcissist - lies for ???. Pain 10/10. Avoid!

Pathological - lies for fun? Pain 1/10 (accept it and enjoy the ride, best friend material)

This is what that person is, and you have to simply accept it. Digging around to guess at a motive that can never be proven true won't change what they are.

For whatever reason you feel that helping them is what you want to do and there's nothing wrong with that, as long as you accept that they are what they are, and the next thing they say to is going to be a lie.
