Once again, it's time for the FNGT!

If you don't know how this works, click this link. That link will take you to another site to give you some additional information and tell you about some of our off-site features. That's also the site where we will host the weekly guitar threads, should Upgoat.net go down.

NOTE: That site is by invitation only. If you want an invite, ask a regular participant (such as @TheRealBuddha or myself)

If you already know what's going on, you probably don't need to click any of those links. You can still visit to see if any changes have been made, as that's also where we kept the archives and have a second forum.

By the way, we're down to just two of us. If you want to help, let us know.

I'm having connectivity issues at the moment.

I also have nothing new. I went through my personal archives and this was the first song shared on my own sharing server. It didn't even get a sub-classification.

Halestorm - Do Not Disturb (B #1, 2, & 3; TB B & P)

It's not really my favorite kind of music but was something the missus wanted to do. So, we did it... Meh... It's not a terrible song. There are far worse songs out there than this one.

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 3 points 4 weeksApr 5, 2024 20:21:46 ago (+3/-0)

I am not familiar with that song. I imagine there are vocals in some parts of it, that I have no clue of what they are or the melody.

Hey but it sounds great! Biff rocks!

[ - ] TheRealBuddha 2 points 4 weeksApr 5, 2024 21:25:32 ago (+2/-0)

The lyrics leave a bit to be desired. As I recall, they're largely about the chick singer being a bit of a slut in a hotel room. Something like that...

It's not really my kind of music but it's not terrible music.

[ - ] CamelsMiller 3 points 4 weeksApr 5, 2024 20:54:28 ago (+3/-0)

I am always in awe and frustrated by your professional ability. That is NOT a dig, or bad or whatever. You are a professional musician, and it sometimes just makes me want to give up lol.

Anyway, great job as always. You seem to be able to play most anything, and get the sound right.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha 3 points 4 weeksApr 5, 2024 21:27:34 ago (+3/-0)

Great to see you!

Yeah, there's a lot of practice that goes on in this house. Even the missus has turned into quite a guitar player. Then again, she has now been at it for quite some time and is quite diligent in her practice.

I've mentioned this before but it's not some innate skill or anything. It's just tons of diligent practicing. If you put the hours in, you get good.

I suppose some folks will never get all that good but I think those are few and far between.

[ - ] MasterSuppressionTechnique 3 points 4 weeksApr 5, 2024 21:35:18 ago (+3/-0)

Sounds darn good in my new headphones.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha 3 points 4 weeksApr 5, 2024 21:46:48 ago (+3/-0)

Sweet! Thanks!

While it's not really my style of music, it's not terrible music. It was also fun to play, which is rewarding in and of itself.

[ - ] MasterSuppressionTechnique 3 points 4 weeksApr 5, 2024 22:52:32 ago (+3/-0)

I admit, I was not expecting a divergence from your normal selections. Pleasantly surprised.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha 3 points 4 weeksApr 5, 2024 23:13:50 ago (+3/-0)

We mix it up now and then, but you can usually bet on something in the 'metal' or 'classic rock' category - sometimes a true classical piece.

I don't mind playing something the missus enjoys. She does the same for me. It all works out in the end, I suppose.

[ - ] OoklaTheMok 1 point 4 weeksApr 6, 2024 16:57:17 ago (+1/-0)

Hell yeah. Biff is getting very good.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha 1 point 4 weeksApr 6, 2024 17:10:44 ago (+1/-0)

Thanks, though that's from quite a while ago. She's gotten much better since then. Tgat was recorded way back in 2020.

At the very least, she's reached the point where she's learning new material quicker than before.

Back then, that took her a few months to learn properly. Today, she'd pick it up in just a few days.

You holding up okay?

Hello everybody, welcome. Last Friday my buddy Verle came over and we enjoyed some beer and some music and some good company and had a damn good time.

it was a Friday Night Party https://soundcloud.com/supermassiveunknown/friday-night-party

[ - ] TheRealBuddha 4 points 4 weeksApr 5, 2024 21:30:36 ago (+4/-0)

Like always, it sounds like you're having fun - and having fun is kind of the point. If you're not having fun, you'll lose interest.

Well, practicing might not be fun, but you get the idea.

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 4 points 4 weeksApr 5, 2024 21:43:55 ago (+4/-0)

I dont practice like you do, I just pick up and play. I do try to spend time playing parts that my fingers need to practice on. I like to just play random chords and rhythms and see if my ears get interested in anything they hear. Most of the time that happens when I play things my fingers dont normally do so then I get something new to practice and practice until it becomes second nature

[ - ] TheRealBuddha 4 points 4 weeksApr 5, 2024 21:49:13 ago (+4/-0)

Yeah, I do a great deal of diligent practice. That's why I can cover anything I want to and cover it well enough for it to sound just like the original.

It's not always fun to practice. When I practice, I don't allow myself to just noodle around. I work on specific goals and I still do that to this day. I suppose I could probably stop practicing but that doesn't sound like something I'd do. I'm pretty sure I'll still be doing it for as long as I'm able to.

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 2 points 4 weeksApr 5, 2024 22:18:17 ago (+2/-0)

I know, though I do set out to practice specific parts of songs of mine that I do not have down to my satisfaction. There are some parts that I still seem to fuck up on every single time through.

There is this one part with a picking thing going on with the D,G,B and high E strings where I kind of alternate a low E and Low A string open pluck keeping the bass part going in the tune and I just can not fucking do it all the way through the riff. The fucking E and A strings get plucked on the 1 beat of each measure alternately, with picking things going on on those other strings in between the 1 beats and I just can not fucking do it!

Though I know, that there were other parts that I play as a matter of routine now at I used to not be able to play through and after diligent practice at it I can now play those parts in the dark with my eyes closed, I will be able to play it, I been trying every day, and I still can't. It's frustrating when that happens, but I will still keep on trying until I get it, and then keep on practicing it so I don't lose it!

[ - ] TheRealBuddha 3 points 4 weeksApr 5, 2024 23:12:33 ago (+3/-0)

Oh, you've improved a great deal.

For example, you didn't do a bitchin' solo before and your rhythm was not even remotely consistent.

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 3 points 4 weeksApr 5, 2024 23:20:04 ago (+3/-0)

That's cause I work on it! LoL

[ - ] TheRealBuddha 2 points 4 weeksApr 6, 2024 15:03:09 ago (+2/-0)

Well, the missus needs a new car. Her car's still her original cheap Bimmer and it got sideswiped this morning.

She was sitting at a stop sign and someone pulled into that road too fast, sliding on the wet sand and they managed to take out the rear quarter panel.

So, now she'll finally have to fucking pick a new car. I've been trying to get her to pick a new car for about a year and a half. She still hasn't picked one.

Now she has no choice.

Also, everyone involved is fine. The accident was at maybe 5 mph. It didn't even pop the airbags on either car.

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 2 points 4 weeksApr 6, 2024 15:46:18 ago (+2/-0)

Thank goodness she was not hurt.

Didn't she pick a Ferrari out last year?

[ - ] TheRealBuddha 2 points 4 weeksApr 6, 2024 16:04:44 ago (+2/-0)

She's picked out all sorts of cars and decided on none of them.

She owns other cars, but none are really a daily driver. She needs a daily driver.

The insurance value on the car is maybe $3500 to $5000. So, that's not going to help. She's convinced that she can fix the car. It was her first car so she's attached to it.

It'll cost more to fix it than it would cost to just buy a replacement and more than the car is worth.

She can get it fixed if she wants, unless the insurance company totals it out and it gets a salvage title.

[ - ] ChatGPT 2 points 4 weeksApr 6, 2024 01:05:27 ago (+2/-0)

Yeah that picking the bass strings and playing the treble strings all with a pick is impossible for me. Fuck that shit. I gave that up. I could never do it. Better to thumbpick the two low strings and fingerpick the top strings.

When you do that though, you wind up shifting from flatpicking to fingerpicking because it's more fun. No volume though cos no fingernails. Oh well. What are gonna do.

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 1 point 4 weeksApr 6, 2024 02:34:13 ago (+1/-0)

It sounds OK if I just straight pluck the A string every time instead of going A-E-A-E like that, but is sounds so much better when I do the A-E thing. It's just for one song and only for a part of the one song, but damn shit just fucks me up. I dont want to give up, eventually I will get it. I hope. I am not ready to give up on it yet.

[ - ] CamelsMiller 3 points 4 weeksApr 5, 2024 21:08:42 ago (+3/-0)

I LOVE your dedication to this format, and your friends being involved. I hope this isn't disrespectful but whenever I hear your recordings I think of this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=swwjTfdOjo4

And I think of Werle: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6BodzqAyPtI

I LOVE you doing all this, and you play shit I can't all the time.

I don't know how to explain how I appreciate it and love it and can't do it and can't replicate it and wish I had people like that in my life.

I'm a fucking hermit in my diabetes and other disease riddled world with nothing and no one and nothing, you are out there having amazing times and fun.

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 4 points 4 weeksApr 5, 2024 21:27:27 ago (+4/-0)

LoL You pretty much nailed it with those references. LoL

And part of the reason I share the music from our parties is so that people who are alone can listen in and feel not quite so alone for a little while and hopefully get a laugh or two along the way. I hope you get some of that from it, and am happy that you enjoy it!

You need to get a girlfriend!

and there is lots of times where nothing happens here too, I don't get to have a good time like that all the time, but I do try to make the most of it when I do!

[ - ] MasterSuppressionTechnique 2 points 4 weeksApr 5, 2024 21:34:40 ago (+2/-0)

What is that? I never heard of that. Is that a joke?

[ - ] MasterSuppressionTechnique 2 points 4 weeksApr 5, 2024 22:53:48 ago (+2/-0)

I think it is a Jewish reference.

[ - ] Anus_Expander 1 point 4 weeksApr 6, 2024 11:24:57 ago (+1/-0)

Would I joke about that??

[ - ] CamelsMiller 3 points 4 weeksApr 5, 2024 21:54:34 ago (+3/-0)

I spent a few minutes listening to old stuff and think I want to try messing around again...

https://img.gvid.tv/i/3zxuc7bu.jpg

I think maybe this has potential, and have some thoughts on transitions. I know I played a part with a capo and need to re-learn how to play it. I have an idea in my mind about how my loneliness has taken over. Something about beauty in myself, but shame on being alone. It's a super melancholy song and sound. Super depressing, and something gen y-z or whatever has no clue about. Something like "Pictures of You" by The Cure.

https://soundcloud.com/thewilake/recording057

Playing it I can hear some arpeggios and single note riffs that could take place. The bass line needs to be major prominent, something like Jeff Ament from PJ. The dissonant cord notes need to be heard hard... then the total shift to major chord "uplifting" chorus sound right at the end.

See when I'm drinking like I am tonight I can hear it all in my head. I can't play it and the drum parts KILL me. I NEED to hear the subtle cymbals and low tom hits, but I have to have the 100% song organization mapped out before I can even try and tap out the beat on a drum machine.

When I was 19 and didn't have responsibilities, and lived with my parents, and had health issues that stopped me from being accountable for things I could spend all night, and days working on things like this.

I HATE to say this, but honestly being buzzed like now, and back then I have a much better track, and ear for what I want. I had an "instant on" recording on a 4-track cassette available, and just did things.

Now it's like I want to record... OK re-arrange the entire room, connect all the cables, and an hour later I lost the vibe. Now UNDO all you did before bed, or tomorrow you can't work from home until you do. So now I have to PLAN "get semi-drunk" then "get all the mixer board and music stuff setup" then listen to old tracks for inspiration, then have a feeling that particular night about a sound and feel, then get the recording equipment working correctly, then test eh levels, then tune the guitar to the old track, OR then start with a NEW track, then use a metronome to figure the time, then open the software, create a track and create a click track on the timing I'm guessing at, Then test an intro or other part.

Go on from there. Seriously. My only chance in a full song is a machine drum witch needs a set timing. I can't just play, then go off time and "sync it up". By this point I'm 90% in the bag and can't be bothered to record. I don't have the luxury or a dedicated PC for recording always available.

I can hear in my head the sounds of that song above, and want to play around. I will try, Ijust can't offer a suggestion on the future

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 3 points 4 weeksApr 5, 2024 22:20:05 ago (+3/-0)

Hell yeah you should keep playing and recording. Maybe you need to get yourself a new all in one recording device that you can set up in a minute when you get the urge

[ - ] MasterSuppressionTechnique 3 points 4 weeksApr 5, 2024 22:55:44 ago (+3/-0)

Digitech Trio+ will generate drums and bass on the fly. Love the look of that Epiphone.

Robber's Cave

https://jumpshare.com/s/D3XDKxiyLjNiS0jf71Yy

Robber's Cave is a place in Oklahoma, where I grew up that has a very curious history. From hidden gold of the Jesse James Gang, to hideouts for smugglers and mercenaries, to psychological experiments by the US government on children, it's peaceful setting belies it's strange history and the hidden truths.

I composed this album as a collection to be played around a night time campfire. I ran the acoustic guitars through a Marshall amp to make them a little gritty. I generally have 3 guitars on each track, J 200 (12 gauge strings), Hummingbird (11 gauge strings) and a Dove (10 gauge strings), as well as an old Fender P bass. A few other instruments make appearances.

While I did write words, my feelings are that... I am really just bored and a little sick of everyone's bad poetry. Plus, my voice isn't as good as my guitar pickin'.

In the end, this ended up as an EP length 26 minute production. I have another 1/2 hour of other tracks, but... these are what fit together best and in this order. I scrapped the rest.

01 "The Secret's of Robber's Cave"

Wolfstein, The Murderer; or, The Secrets of a Robber's Cave is an 1850 chapbook based on Percy Bysshe Shelley’s 1811 Gothic horror novel St. Irvyne; or, The Rosicrucian.

02 "Horsethief Springs"

In the post-Civil War 1800s, outlaws including Jesse James and the Daltons would hide out near the natural spring on Winding Stair Mountain and ambush passing travelers.

03 "Towards Tupelo"

J.J. McAlester's trading partners were based out of Tupelo, supplying the founding of McAlester, Oklahoma and its trading post.

04 "Kimes' Coffins"

Matthew Kimes was an Oklahoma bank robber, murderer, and brother of George Kimes; who led the Kimes Gang in the 1920s. The Kimes brothers began their outlaw ways as little more than petty thieves at a young age but quickly moved on to bank robbery.

05 "Grapes In The Press"

We are the grapes in the wine press of God's wrath; a reference to "The Grapes of Wrath:, of course.

"It happens that every man in a bank hates what the bank does, and yet the bank does it. The bank is something more than men, I tell you. It's the monster."

06 "Right Handed Lightning Whelk"

Lightning Whelk have a left-handed shell (shell opening to the left with shell spire pointing “up). Abnormally right-handed Lightning Whelks are very uncommon, but may be found on rare occasions.

07 "By The Burro's Grave"

Jesse James' stolen gold is supposedly hiding, there. Many have spent a great deal of time hunting for the lost treasure. "Follow the trail line coming through the mountains just east of the lone hill where we buried the jack [burro]. His grave is east of a rock. This contract made and entered into this V day of March 1876. This gold shall belong to who signs below."

08 "Wandering the Keechi Hills"

Looking for the buried gold. Ain't found nothin' yet.

09 "Embers At The End"

The campfire is going out.

I listened for a bit. Great job! Thanks for sharing.

I'm having connectivity issues, but that's because I choose to live in a very rural area.

[ - ] MasterSuppressionTechnique 4 points 4 weeksApr 5, 2024 21:33:37 ago (+4/-0)

Don't worry, you've heard them all before individually... most, anyways. Now it is a like a completed Pokemon deck.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha 3 points 4 weeksApr 5, 2024 21:46:03 ago (+3/-0)

Ah, I thought the second track sounded familiar. (I listen to a lot of music, so I can't possibly remember it all.)

[ - ] Smedleys_Butler 3 points 4 weeksApr 6, 2024 00:19:40 ago (+3/-0)

Will check. Bet it could make good poetry with or without words

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 2 points 4 weeksApr 5, 2024 21:37:37 ago (+2/-0)

Hell yeah! You should add vocals to it! Another melody can make it sound even better even if you don't like the vocals. So far I am up to the third song and that's some mighty fine pickin'. I would stick around your campfire!

isn't this one of yours?

i dont really know
all i go at into these days is I go and i like to feel the people
im not going to try a put over im going to play an honest gig
i like people, i like people to get loose
i like to see people enjoying themselves
and i dont like to see poeple get hurt
when i see that, i like people, it turns me on, you know
and the more they go, the more i feel
im like, im like
it builds and builds
you know
just carry them
you know
going and going
I do and I dont cause like I dont and I never
i never go out and think about the bread we're making
all i wanna see is that all i wanna go and see
are the kids there?
and enjoying what they're playing?
no no yeah, thats like anything
its like we got sick and tired of hearing all the bullshit
you know
you love your brother and flower power forever
and mating with a chick on the corner
you're hung up on it all
which is all a fallacy in a dream
we, we brought things down to a reality
you know
our songs you know
theres a real thing behind it
you know
which i think you want
which i think you want
parts of our environment evolved in our minds you know
in the beginning there were very heavy words
and they were very intense words,
very personal words
it happens
it just comes out
what can i say
i dont know
its like looking into the void
then I hear that,
who are you?

man was born and the first thing they did was clunk smack on something and make a sound out of something
and he liked that sound
and he thought that it was good
and the rest of us went out from there
playing rock music
then he started to put numbers to the thing
and that was a bit of a freak on me
so it was like i need to stone wall
so if i come rough, we just go,
we go make sikle sickle sounds
then you go into the jungle
and you hear some incredible sounds
gorillas eating people
they dont even know what the fuck they're saying
some of they rhythms they come out with your minds blown
fucking hell man
they're going to lock you up one day
fucking hell man
whats this?
its like opening another door
i could say to myself one day we're going to make the internet make the brick wall
and i think fuking hell, the next one is going to be that much harder
