I've done my own for decades and it looks good. I also did all my kids til they got about 14 then they flat out refused to let me touch it and they go to a barber. I also shave my own pubes for anyone wondering.

Quality beard trimmer to lowest bare blade settings every 2 weeks, shower then have the wifey do a touch up to make sure I didn't miss anything. I've probably saved a fortune over the past 10 years simply doing this.

I've just made myself bald every 3-5 days for the last 15 years. I used to use a cut throat razor to make the head lovely and smooth but I've moved onto one of those specialist electric hair trimmers, it's pretty good and after not using a cut throat on my head for a year or so, I tried it again and ended up with some lacerations lol, I've lost the skill of using a cut throat on my head, so I will stick with the speciality trimmer now.

I've been doing my own haircuts for about 5 years now. I bought a little strap that goes around your forehead to the back of your neck, and it acts as a guide to help you cut your neck line straight. Everything else I use the clipper with several different guards. I start with the #2 around the ears and back of the neck, and work my way up and use the #8 on top.
