I have always considered how this was handled one of the greatest mistakes the US made. The US should have annexed all the way down Mexico's southern border and kicked the Mexican government to the curb. The second major fuckup was not making Cuba a state.

Side note, a lot of people don't realize the War of 1812 was an attempt to conquer Canada but the USA doesn't "conquer" so that was sanitized for the history books.
