Nope. I have in fact, owned and operated two diesel Toyota Hiluxes since 2010.
Back in the days when I was pulling down some pretty serious "fuck you" money, I started laying the groundwork for what would come next for my family.
My experience with diesel Hiluxes came from Afghanistan, where I learned that they are nearly indestructible by any earthly force up to and including prolonged exposure to Afghanis.
So I bought two. But, I purchased them from the factory and had them shipped over directly from Japan as, "Farm Equipment", like tractors. They are also titled and registered here as "Farm Equipment", like tractors.
Because the rules are different for them. If they weren't, there wouldn't be a single Kubota dealership in the US.
(If the US Army taught me anything, it's that you can do almost anything as long as the paperwork is filled out completely and correctly. Or even incorrectly. I once saw a MEDDAC unit get a call for an the nearest O-6 to come down to the airfield and sign for two (2) each, AH-1 Attack Helicopters, OD green in color, because someone in the supply chain made a typo in the NSN on the request form. Nobody had picked up on the mistake, because it just so happened that there WAS an aviation unit at that airfield that DID operate AH-1's.)
"But, Bulletstopper.", you say, "That means that you can't operate them on the streets and highways as a 'Motor Vehicle'."
Incorrect. In this community it is not at all uncommon for locals to drive their tractors on the local state farm roads and down to the store for beer and scratch tickets. And being as they look just like any other small pickup, nobody even looks twice at the plates. I've had DPS troopers park right next to me and never even raised an eyebrow.
Granted we won't be taking any long cross-country trips in them (that's what the M35 is for), but, when the time comes for them to be MOST useful, nobody is going to be looking at registration plates anymore anyway.
YMMV according to your state's MV laws.
(And having standard transmissions, they are virtually nigger proof.)
Yeah so the trick is the box tube chassis, which american-sold jap trucks don't do anymore but american trucks (chevy, ram, ford?) do. I love Diesel and wish there were more available. Mazda made a 6 wagon with a turbo diesel, which would've been a great people mover, but it never made it to north america, probably because turbodiesels out-compete EVs.

Top Gear tried (and failed) to kill one:
