People look at past tumultuous societal events and make the mistake of thinking it all happened instantly and all at once. They lose sight of the fact that the conditions necessary to bring them about were often decades in the making.

It always starts slowly, at first, and small. Then very fast.

For instance, the French-born Charles I ruled the Kingdom of Sicily for 16 years.

The pressure kept building up for almost two decades. In the end, all it took was one drunk sergeant, named Drouet, pestering a young married woman, to set it all off.
