I look forward to hearing if anyone tries to use the old 12 pounder blackpowder cannons again just for fun. The fucking things are everywhere just sitting around as decorations, in front of courthouses and cemetaries and shit. Video also contains an analysis of what caused the explosion, including slow-motion video. In summary, the RPG was a "reactivated" RPG, so it involved a weld that wasn't in the original manufacture. That's where it failed. They also used military ammo that stressed the weld more than a typical homebrew design.

If that weld hadn't failed, the pressure likely would have built up to the point where the resulting explosion turned his head in to paste.

Technically it looks like the launcher exploded from the normal hot gasses out of the rocket. The grenade didn't.
