While windows may have used some core routines from dos it was way more than a gui added on top

Only when NT came along. 3.11 and 9x rode on top of DOS. The reason ME was such a shit heap was they tried to pull DOS functions out and put it into ME and it failed miserably. XP for the home user was supposed to be ME2 but it was so bad they couldn't sell it so they stripped out all the domain controller shit and renamed it XP. Ironically M$ created a secure and stable OS that worked so well they had to kill it off. There was zero reason why they couldn't be supporting XP today EXCEPT for creating shitloads of backdoors and usage info for any fuck who wants to buy it or break in without a warrant.

ZERO people on the face of the Earth, except the government, ever said "I can't wait for the next version of Windows to come out".

Absolutely correct. After the XP source leak a few years ago I am still awaiting some new souped up XP to come out one of these Christmases...

Same here. There is a micropatching service for XP still around but I've heard that M$ does shit to patching to make that hard to do as well. At the end of the day, someone has got to get Linux on the desktop where most people can use it. It's the only way around this M$ fuckery.
