Only when NT came along. 3.11 and 9x rode on top of DOS. The reason ME was such a shit heap was they tried to pull DOS functions out and put it into ME and it failed miserably. XP for the home user was supposed to be ME2 but it was so bad they couldn't sell it so they stripped out all the domain controller shit and renamed it XP. Ironically M$ created a secure and stable OS that worked so well they had to kill it off. There was zero reason why they couldn't be supporting XP today EXCEPT for creating shitloads of backdoors and usage info for any fuck who wants to buy it or break in without a warrant.
ZERO people on the face of the Earth, except the government, ever said "I can't wait for the next version of Windows to come out".
Same here. There is a micropatching service for XP still around but I've heard that M$ does shit to patching to make that hard to do as well. At the end of the day, someone has got to get Linux on the desktop where most people can use it. It's the only way around this M$ fuckery.

However Gary Kildall had nothing to do with those. His company Digital Research created a CPM clone called DR-DOS. At the same time, Timothy Paterson created a CPM clone called Q-DOS.
That's kind of misleading. Digital Research was the developer of CP/M. DR-DOS isn't a clone of CP/M, it's a clone of MS/PC-DOS. It was released as the CP/M era was coming to a close in 1988. It could be fair to say CP/M-86, a different animal, eventually evolved into DR-DOS.
Q-DOS is kind of a look-alike of CP/M, but to say it was a clone is kind of a misnomer. A Ferrari and a Ford do similar things and may even share parts, but neither is a clone of the other.
