Looking for input: car subwoofers

submitted by bobdole9 to AskUpgoat 5 monthsNov 25, 2023 14:38:25 ago (+3/-0)     (AskUpgoat)

Any car audio goats here?

I'm debating about whether to buy a powered subwoofer or to get a loaded sub box and buy an amp separately.

Powered subwoofer pro: amp is designed for speakers and enclosure

Powered subwoofer con: amp takes a shit, might be unable to replace

Loaded box pro: if the amp dies, not screwed

Loaded box con: making sure amp works well with sub and enclosure.

I'm debating between these right now:
Powered: Rockford Fosgate P300, Powered: Rockford Fosgate P500, Powered: Kicker 12" shallow mount

OR

Loaded box: Kicker 12" shallow mount and some sort of amp. Maybe this...not sure.

Is it worth getting a powered unit or piecemeal parts to make it better?

Curious to what kind of music you are going to blast.

I dicked around subwoofers for my computer for a while. Because a bit of a hobby. Even bought a fancy sound card.

These days, the computer is gathering dust. It’s easier to use a tablet or phone.

My usual go to is a Norwegian electronic duo called Röyksopp.

The best example of their frequency range is the song Save Me.

Also a fan of Denimclad Babboons.

Most of my tunes could qualify for driving / racing games. Good beats. The bass was sufficient with the stock speakers, but after replacing the original damaged ones, I want a bit more thump.

Question, what is it going in? Your vehicle becomes one with the speaker box and the system you choose will hit different in different automobiles. If you have a truck get the compact system in a truck box. If it's a car or SUV, go for the individual pieces and build it yourself.
Also, consider thieves. A contained unit is easy to smash and grab. Individual pieces placed throughout the vehicle are more time consuming to steal.
Last advice is start with the Deck and work your way to the speakers. Most manufacturers or audio supply stores know what components work best with the model of deck you choose and are more than happy to share advice so they don't have to listen to bitching later about the weird feedback hum you can hear through the speakers when the car is running

what is it going in?

Ford Fusion, using stock head unit. Planning to wire a line out converter.

go for the individual pieces and build it yourself

That's the path I'm planning now after thinking on it. There's bundled kits for about $100 than an equivalent powered set.

bitching later about the weird feedback hum

Perk to DIY car audio...you get to bitch at yourself! Hoping I won't need to add a capacitor to this setup.

Good luck with the system
Don't cheap out on the capacitor

I don't know shit about this kinda shit, but I'm having a lot of fun imagining you cruising brown town playing o fortuna on full volume.

More of an 1812 Overture guy myself.

Blasting classical get you more looks than you'd think.

I think you're looking more for the output.

Punny.

The trick with car audio is tweeters w crossover that send highs to some speakers and lows to others. Some amps have that somewhat built in. in short: its generally not just buying speakers but it can be if thats built in.

Check this guide out if youre diy

Once you get into giant woofers, then you start rattling doors and thats a whole new mess

The ones I've seen have their own crossover knobs...150-200Hz seems to be the highest. Fiddling to not have spontaneous boom is expected.

I'm using the stock head unit and have replaced the four door speakers...planning to splice rear speaker wire and adding a line-out converter.

I had door rattlers in my bachelor days...now I'm just looking for the windows to rattle a bit.

If you get a loc then get one with a bass knob. If you get a bass knob then build a mount in your dash. If you build a mount in your dash then build tweeter mounts, too. Ear level directed at your face. Thats my thinking.

You will fuck your hearing in no time.

If you spend most of your time in car you should listen audio books. Every library have them and there are millions online.

But if you don't care about books and your hearing ... buy good headphones.

[ - ] observation1 2 points 5 monthsNov 25, 2023 14:54:06 ago (+2/-0)

Headphones are illegal to drive in and rightfully so

All the subs I'm looking for will have a volume control knob. It's likely never to pass full power, but when its full power, I'm not trying to break windows or ear drums.

The secret to buying car audio systems is to take your money and spend it on something else that will actually free yourself from the Jew.

[ - ] ItsOk2bArian 1 point 5 monthsNov 26, 2023 11:58:26 ago (+1/-0)

Music is magic, the Jew knows this. That's why they control the industry and suppress good artists while promoting degenerate whores and destructive narcissist.
Playing good music is good for the soul

Then learn how to build a guitar, and cut out the Jew.

That's like saying,"learn to sculpt a masterpiece so you don't have to go to the museum". Creating a musical instrument is an art form. Not everyone can has the aptitude. I can build you a nice house faster than a nice guitar
