Because owls live in trees over which they are fiercely territorial.

I got a pair that lives on my property. The property isn't that big. Only one pair around. I hear em driving off intruders. Really they own the tree, and I just own the ground.

They have evolved feathers that make them silent.
In the middle of the night, all of a sudden... you can no longer think coherently.
