I don't believe in that bull shit about it spoiling after 2 hours and I'm typically of the opinion that if it smells alright (which it does) and it looks alright (it does) then it's fine. My mom is the type to worry and she wants to throw away hundreds of dollars of meat just because it thawed out for a day. I know our ancestors didn't have fridges, I doubt every unpreserved piece of meat was killed within a day of being butchered, and people these days tend to be pussies who let the 1% of bad cases over rule the 99% of the time things are fine. Am I being stupid in this case
Just put some of the vegetables in the freezer above the fridge and close the door to the big one. The compressor might need to be serviced soon though.
this is a possible insurance claim - I've seen it done - if she has renter's/home insurance - look into it if it's super costly because she may have a claim depending on what she tells them

If 90+ degrees, it might be questionable. Anything less for 24 hours it is fine. Refreeze.
Example: government standard for tunafish is something like three days. I will eat it ten days later.
I eat all food way past the suggested government date. So does my one friend.
Here are a simple few but critical rules. If it looks bad, toss it. No exceptions. If it smells bad, toss it, no exceptions. If it tastes bad, toss it, no exceptions. Otherwise, chow down!
E: I have never had food poisoning.
E2: Forgot one other, if it feels bad (slimy), toss it. No exceptions.
E3: I need to add this. You know your meat sits out in the heat for a long time before the butcher gets to it, right?
I was wondering the same thing. Are we talking 100's like I have 10 chickens and about 6 roasts with a brisket thrown in there or is it one of these ones that still have meat from 2019 in there.
If it is a chest freezer, and it was full, the bottom stuff is probably fine. Give the top layer of food to the chickens.
The big problem is going to be refreezing it. A normal freezer can't flash freeze a whole fridge load of mass fast enough. So anything that thawed out will need to freeze again and it will be slow enough that large ice crystals will form and make everything mushy when you eat it.
I don't really understand the never refreeze thawed meat opinion. I'd be surprised if anyone hasn't bought one of those big packs of chicken breasts that are often somewhat still frozen, take it home and put it in the fridge. Cook some the next day and freeze the rest that is now completely thawed out. If you do this with chicken, how is it a risk with other meat? edit: i get that it's been in the fridge and not the counter, but are we talking thawed or room temp meat?
If it is a frost free freezer it will routinely get above freezing to melt the frost, that is what causes freeze burn to food. The look and smell test will work for me.
Its a joke. I had a neighbor when shtf had a standing freezer defrost. They cooked what they could as they went but couldnt keep up so after a few days he was making this pork butt and he cooking outside and we could see him rubbing everything under the sun on it.
I mean just dumping every thing he could on it when we asked he said it stunk really bad and it would kill the germs. And then followed up with "but look, It doesnt stink anymore! " and held it up all proudly.
haha poor guy. He'll survive the end of the world for sure.
But having said that our freezer got unplugged accidentally last year and we didn't notice for a couple days. Some of the meat thawed enough to drip -- which is how we noticed the freezer wasn't working -- but I just plugged it back in and re-froze everything. We've eaten everything from that freezer since then and no one got sick. But it's a chance.
If there's any discoloration or suspicious odor then toss that meat, of course. But if everything seems okay then, well, you know what I'd do.
How certain are you that the freezer was off for less than 24 hours? The frozen food is thermal mass so even after a day it should still be cold. If you’re telling me the shit reached room temperature in an insulated box the food is spoiled. You can cook it to high temp but it won’t be good.

The rule "if it smells bad, it is" is great until it isn't. If you were a nigger I would tell you to wash it all in bleach. Realistically, I would toss it.
