I remember watching the Crimean invasion at the time and there was endless speculation about why Russia was invading (they weren't in Russian uniforms) and trying to figure out why it was going on. I didn't remember seeing anything about the coup at the time, then I realized I was getting a lot of my news from reddit's conspiracy sub. A quick check... and there was nothing about the coup and everyone was focusing on Russia's reaction to it. Russia's reaction is not remotely questionable in hindsight.

List of posts for "Ukraine" on the reddit.com/r/conspiracy sub for 2014. No mention of jewsa coup. https://files.catbox.moe/yxragc.png

Yea, Crimea was about securing the Russian black sea fleet main port access or something, plus Crimea has always been more Russian than ukraine, with majority ethnic Rus. Losing crimea to a hostile Nation was a National security risk.
