Depends. What's it for? There's good "eatin" apples, and there's good "cookin" apples.

Watcha bakin' with it?

Except the current "red delicious" which, while red, is no longer delicious.

Years ago they made the decision to start selecting for the features that got them sold, like size, color, shelf-life, etc. and sadly, taste fell by the wayside. The RD's on your grocer shelves these days are nothing like the ones we had as kids. Feed them to the pigs.

One of our favorite snacks here is a honey crisp sliced 8 ways, a spoon, and a jar of good peanut butter.

I think they are starting to do that with fuji. They are one of the more economical apples the same as red delicious. But if they aren't selling them for much the select for volume over taste, which sucks because fujis can be very good some of the time.

Absolutely. Fujis were one of my favorites too. I will choose flavor over appearance every time.

In a world of fake and gay, they can't even leave the fucking apples alone, FFS.

So far granny smiths are still good for baking because of their tartness. You're going to be adding a bunch of sugar anyway, so you hit a good balance of flavors.

I voted for Fuji, I buy once a month, usually 30 or so. They keep very well in the crisper and are considered one of, or the sweetest apple

Hell, I’m so old I remember when golden delicious came out. Before that, all we had was red and green.

I think I saw a post on here a while back about an old geezer that goes around saving apple varieties that are almost extinct. Wowser. Some of the ones he has would be amazing.
A man up the road has some crabapples that are red. Mom used to get them and make jelly out of them. Absolutely the best apple jelly ever.

Golden Delicious is an absolute scourge amongst apples and a pox upon fruit.

Golden Delicious and its entire lineage are TRASH APPLES. You don't eat it, you don't bake it, you trash it because it is a worthless embarrasment deserving of zero attention and even less praise.

Golden Delicious crosses produce varieties as equally awful as their yellow disgrace of a parent with its sickly-sweet and bodyless flavour. The degenerate masses will fawn over anything of an intense superficial quality even if it is utterly devoid of depth or substance. Being a complete failure at everything else, the GD is at least competant at fitting this profile. So naturally, every supermarket in North America has its fruit section inundated with one or more of these abominations:

- Gala
- Honey Crisp
- Pink Lady
- Ambrosia

You may as well consider these apples the same as GD, just as one does not distinguish greatly between mouse and rat shit. They host the retarded GD genes, offer the repulsive GD flavour, and only appeal to dull-mouthed GD eaters.

A special word for Gala, which is so maddeningly ubiquitous and unappetizing I would not be suprised to learn that its other parent was a frozen dinner. I assume it was given this particular name as "Ga - la" approximates the sound one makes when rejecting a piece of grisel that has strayed too close to the windpipe. "Gala" being a celebration of sorts, this apple will only live up to its name when I see it in a typed list with the heading "Permanently Extinct Varieties - Abandoned by Nature and Spat Upon by God".

Some facts about the Golden Delicious:

It arose from a chance seedling. Of course, Nature would have terminated such an arising on her own accord but Man in his folly has sought to continue it. In other words, a successful trap set by Satan.

It had the highest number of genes (57,000) of any plant genome studied as of 2010. What more need be said here? Like the activity of a bloated bureaucracy, nothing of merit has been produced and everyone is worse off for it.

Golden Delicious was first discovered in West Virginia which is also famous for its coal deposits, the latter being a preferable snack.

May all Golden Delicious cultivars one day be collected and fired into the sun: incinerated into a faint cloud of their own nauseating perfume, never to be experienced by sentient beings again.

I upvoted this simply for the passion expressed, and the quality of the writing.

(I am supportive of Mr. Musk's efforts in rocketry in Boca Chica for the hope it gives me to one day be able to actually fire various and sundry miscreants into the sun. I am gratified to see that I am not alone in this dream.)

wow you have some passionate hate for the golden delicious and pretty much every commercially popular apple variety.

what is the best apple in your opinion?

Haralson, because I like good tart applesauce.

Granny smiths are objectively the best. The only other fruit I eat is grapes straight from my grapevine.

I also like Paula Reds and Ida Reds. Great apples!

What are we making? A pie? Or, just eating them straight?
