No Ukrainian would ever describe the country as "Ukraine used to be part of Russia, and now it is separate." This is how a Russian thinks about the Ukraine. A Ukrainian would say "The Ukraine was part of the Soviet Union but we regained our independence when the USSSR fell"

No Ukrainian would ever describe the language as "It is like Russian but some of the endings and stuff are different" They would say "Ukrainian and Russian were always similar but are two different languages. The soviets banned it and forced everyone to talk Russian. After two generations of that Ukrainian was forever changed and is much more similar to Russian now."

He gives everything away when he talks about "except in the west where the language is much more like Polish" This is how a Russian who's first language is Russian thinks about the Ukrainian language
