Yeah, I wouldn't buy them. Get the one's with the batteries you replace once a year. It keeps the costs down, and gets old, possibly failing, batteries out of your home. Especially if you pick a day once a year to just replace all the batteries.

That and you can afford to buy more of them. It's a good idea to have more than the bare minimum for this sort of thing. And it's a good idea to replace the units every ~5-10 years. Yes, all of them.

See here in Australia, they already made this swap and have made it illegal to use the old styled battery smoke alarms. This is so that the landlord can make routine house checks without giving notice. They can claim that the wifi signal from the smoke alarm isn't working and send a friendly technician over to check it out. Not allowed to refuse the tech to enter the premises to verify that the smoke alarm is in working order.
