What an idiot. His charm was supposed to be bulletproof, but he was shot with a shotgun shell. The witch doctor would need to cast a totally different spell for that.

Ran into this same sort of silliness in Liberia, Mali, and Niger.

The witch-doctors excuse for the charm not working is always the same too.

See, the power of the charm is based upon the wearers belief in it. If he got shot, it's not because the charm was faulty, it's because he didn't believe hard enough.

Testing it like that means that he had doubts. And that's why it failed.

Also, if you see them with various colored bits of string or ribbon tied to their AK's, those are charms too.
They're counter-charms to beat the bullet-proofing charms.

Which is also provides another handy excuse for the witch-doctors when their "bullet-proof" charm fails.

"Hey, sorry bruh, but the other guy's faith in his counter-charmed AK was stronger than your faith in the "bullet-proof" charm."
