Looks like a pipe cleaner woven through the strings on the first fret. You guys ever done that before?

Some Bass players use a piece of kitchen sponge in front of the bridge, under the strings to muffle and soften the highs.

Some bassists also play with cotton glove on.

Interesting. A stand up bass and an old leather work glove were used to make the original godzilla roar. It was a closely guarded secret for years. The guys who made the sounds said they tried everything from cranking the gain up on recordings of squeaky doors and stuff. Eventually one of them took an old work glove that was hardened from exposure/work/ and iirc sap, or syrup of some kind that had hardened. He gripped a string as tight as he could with the gloved hand and pulled. As his hand moved closer to the bridge it created that weird godzilla noise.

Is he using it to mute/muffle any open strings?

I'd have to see the video of him playing while using it to confirm.

Freebird live - good call, I edited the post and yeah I think that's what he's doing. I can't play slide but I own one. I'll try it out right now and see how it goes.

Edit- yup it works well

He is 100% using it to mute the off-strings that he is not playing slide on.

Watch Derek Trucks use his strumming pick-hand to mute the off-strings. His thumb, and pinky are laying on the other strings not used.

Very cool, Derek is awesome - made me wonder if that was how Duane played. Here is his technique, pretty much the same as Derek.

You gotta fast forward to 18:33 cause it's the Allman bros

I tried the thumb mute method for the first today, with and without the pipe cleaner. I think the pipe cleaner helps out quite a bit and I found the thumb mute to feel more natural while attempting slide playing. Picking rules from that position, maybe I'll tune a guitar to open d and start practicing, who knows maybe in my 90s I could play like Duane.

This was the precursor to the fuzz pedal

Ancient Bonzai technique to muffle the growth of certain branches.

Precursor to the fuzz pedal was Link Wrays ripped speaker, according to legend.
