Once again, it's time for the FNGT!

If you don't know how this works, click this link. That link will take you to another site to give you some additional information and tell you about some of our off-site features. That's also the site where we will host the weekly guitar threads, should Talk.lol go down.

NOTE: That site is by invitation only. If you want an invite, ask a regular participant (such as @Sleazy or myself)

If you already know what's going on, you probably don't need to click any of those links. You can still visit to see if any changes have been made, as that's also where we kept the archives and have a second forum.

By the way, we're down to just two of us. If you want to help, let us know.

I was visiting my buddy Verle last night when my other buddy Chris texted me asking if I wanted to jam. I said I am at Verle's and he said he will bring two guitars and be right over.

Here we are playing our song fireside

That does sound like y'all were having a good time.

[ - ] Sleazy 4 points 8 monthsSep 8, 2023 20:33:10 ago (+4/-0)

We had a good time. Some old man saw the guitars when Chris got dropped off and asked if he could come listen and we said hell yeah, then as we were playing, there was knocking in his door, and Verle hollers out who is it, and the guy says, its your neighbor. I thought he was going to say we were being too loud, but he wanted to come in and listen too!

A coincidental audience is always nice. I did a lot of playing in public spaces, close enough to be called busking, and it's great when people go out of their way to listen.

Live music has been bringing people together for as long as we've been banging on rocks and making bitchin' solos.

[ - ] Sleazy 4 points 8 monthsSep 8, 2023 20:38:10 ago (+4/-0)

We were thinking about going outside by the building Verle lives in and drawing a crowd, maybe next time.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 4 points 8 monthsSep 8, 2023 20:46:39 ago (+4/-0)

Do it. Put a hat or guitar case out in front and you might make beer money.

[ - ] Sleazy 4 points 8 monthsSep 8, 2023 20:50:06 ago (+4/-0)

I think the people there would love it! We could get them all singing together, that would be cool

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 4 points 8 monthsSep 8, 2023 21:05:46 ago (+4/-0)

I've mentioned this before, there's nothing better than a sing-along.

It's even more awesome if they're singing your song. That's a high unlike many other highs.

[ - ] Sleazy 3 points 8 monthsSep 8, 2023 21:12:17 ago (+3/-0)

Man if we could get them to do that, that would be something!

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 3 points 8 monthsSep 8, 2023 21:20:14 ago (+3/-0)

It'd take work. You'd have to first get them to listen - and then get them to listen multiple times.

It takes a dedicated following and music they can buy. They take it home with them, they love it, and they come see you more often. Eventually, there's enough to not only sing your song but you can put the mic out in front of them and they'll sing a whole chorus or maybe even an entire verse.

Axl Rose had that shit figured out. He too loves a sing-along.

[ - ] MasterSuppressionTechnique 2 points 8 monthsSep 8, 2023 20:14:33 ago (+2/-0)

Nice tune. I suppose I should get around to doing lyrics for my stuff, some day. Just not usually my Forte. Your little arpeggio trills sound pretty okay!

[ - ] Sleazy 2 points 8 monthsSep 8, 2023 20:16:40 ago (+2/-0)

Thanks. That one did not have any lyrics until one day me and Chris were playing it out in the back yard and I told him just sing what you or we are doing, like that Otis guy in that dock of the bay song, so thats what he did. He sang what we were doing. LoL

[ - ] Hall_of_Cost 1 point 8 monthsSep 9, 2023 13:03:59 ago (+1/-0)

Love this tune, sounds like a blast. Is that just recorded on your phone? Sounds pretty well balanced for a phone microphone and I can dig the vibe.

Hello and welcome to another Friday Night Guitar Thread! Like normal, we'll get you started...

So, this is actually a track that has been in the making for a long time. I wanted to show that Malmsteen isn't the only one. Well, that and I wanted to thrash. That means we pulled out all the stops.

A Scalloped Neck And A Bag Of Tricks (the usual suspects)

No, those aren't real vocals. They're a chorus setting on a fancy keyboard with like a zillion voices. I do not actually have a choir available, at least not easily. Though, I could probably call in a couple of favors and have access to one.

Anyhow, that's a scalloped neck and a bag of tricks. You'll hear almost everything (including the tremelo and pretty much eight fingers tapping) and nothing. For as complicated as it sounds, it's musically pretty simple. The tecniques are hard, but we stay in our lane as far as keys and key changes. This makes it easier for the casual listener and nobody likes jazz.

Rock on, Goats! Rock on!

[ - ] Sleazy 7 points 8 monthsSep 8, 2023 20:11:50 ago (+7/-0)

Wow! I dare say that is fucking super fucking fornicatingly awesome!

My son just said it sounds like the final level of Guitar Hero! LoL

I did not expect this tonight when you told me you had something new!

Holy shit, that's some fucking shredding!

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 6 points 8 monthsSep 8, 2023 20:16:55 ago (+6/-0)

It's a fun one. It took some work and it's a bag of tricks combined into the results. It was fun. It was definitely fun.

[ - ] Sleazy 6 points 8 monthsSep 8, 2023 20:18:47 ago (+6/-0)

it's relentless, from beginning to end

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 5 points 8 monthsSep 8, 2023 20:24:51 ago (+5/-0)

That's kinda the goal. Hell, at one point I'm reaching over my picking hand to manipulate the vibrato system. I think in my haste I called it a trem earlier, which is plain retarded. LOL I'll leave it as an error for all to witness.

It's really just a bunch of showmanship done orally.

[ - ] Sleazy 5 points 8 monthsSep 8, 2023 20:33:48 ago (+5/-0)

You are definitely showing off!

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 4 points 8 monthsSep 8, 2023 20:37:44 ago (+4/-0)

Yes, yas I am... I suppose technically there's even some eight finger tapping as I was using everything but my thumbs. The good news is that I can play it all again, exactly the same as I first played it.

Well, I can right now. Ask me again in six months and I'll have forgotten the details.

It didn't take a bunch of takes. It took a bunch of practice. I spent a long time rewriting parts to make it less technical sounding and more melodic. It changed quite a bit as I ironed out the details.

[ - ] Sleazy 5 points 8 monthsSep 8, 2023 20:38:43 ago (+5/-0)

That would be an impressive one to see you play live and in person

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 5 points 8 monthsSep 8, 2023 20:50:07 ago (+5/-0)

Oh, I'd go full retard and be as flashy as I could be. I can make it look a whole lot harder than it is.

It's part of being a showman. I'm good at it.

Amazingly, I seem to have missed a major wind storm. I've got the radio on (listening to the fire department, rescue, etc) and there are trees down all over the place - and have been for hours.

Somehow, it completely missed me.

[ - ] Sleazy 5 points 8 monthsSep 8, 2023 20:50:50 ago (+5/-0)

Thats a good thing that it missed you. Must be the way the mountains steered the air flow

[ - ] MasterSuppressionTechnique 4 points 8 monthsSep 8, 2023 20:08:36 ago (+4/-0)

Nice. I just saw Malmsteen on a bit of a lark. Gotta love those scalloped necks. I always think about getting one.

🤘

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 5 points 8 monthsSep 8, 2023 20:15:17 ago (+5/-0)

It requires really precise and consistent pressure, but once you nail that it's good to go. It's a very light touch which means you can speed up your fretting.

I highly recommend playing with one before buying it.

[ - ] MasterSuppressionTechnique 4 points 8 monthsSep 8, 2023 20:19:00 ago (+4/-0)

Ultimate economy of movement. I quite like the way they feel.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 3 points 8 monthsSep 8, 2023 20:26:25 ago (+3/-0)

It is/can be. You really need to get used to it. It's really easy to pull a note sharp. In this particular case, I was strung up with 7s instead of my usual 8s for a scalloped neck. So, it was even easier to pull the note sharp but oh so light when you do nail it.

[ - ] Hall_of_Cost 2 points 8 monthsSep 9, 2023 12:50:47 ago (+2/-0)

Dang man... I love that we have such a shredder here! It was the girl's birthday yesterday so I was preoccupied, glad I came by today cause that rocks! Also if you ever want to hang out and jam just let me know lol

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 2 points 8 monthsSep 9, 2023 17:23:19 ago (+2/-0)

I'm way out in the middle of Nowhere, Maine. But, I actually met a few people from the old Voat. One of them still emails but they're busy with the real world shit they have to cope with.

Glad ya liked it. I figured it was a good time to finish up an original and share it.

I can do all sorts of genres as originals, but they just take so much time.

[ - ] MasterSuppressionTechnique 4 points 8 monthsSep 8, 2023 20:16:37 ago (+4/-0)

I call this one

"Glass in the Sand"

https://www.sndup.net/qdfg/

Slightly Stoopid has really dropped off in quality and they sang an autoparts commercial at the last show I saw them play at. Pretty disappointing.

So... now if I want to hear the new shit, I gotta make it up, myself.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 3 points 8 monthsSep 8, 2023 20:22:29 ago (+3/-0)

Hmm... I'm unfamiliar with Slightly Stoopid. That's okay, I can dig it. I'm listening now, though it started a bit jerky due to my horrible lack of bandwidth.

[ - ] MasterSuppressionTechnique 3 points 8 monthsSep 8, 2023 21:01:11 ago (+3/-0)

I've outgrown their bad poetry, but I still dug the sound.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 3 points 8 monthsSep 8, 2023 21:08:13 ago (+3/-0)

I'll give 'em a listen this weekend. I wrote it down. Well, I typed it into a text file, just now and we'll see if they interest me. I am having bandwidth issues right now - but not too terribly. I doubt I could stream a video right now.

[ - ] Sleazy 2 points 8 monthsSep 8, 2023 20:37:24 ago (+2/-0)

That sounds real nice. I like it. Did you record that in two guitar parts or are you playing both those parts at once??

[ - ] MasterSuppressionTechnique 2 points 8 monthsSep 8, 2023 20:42:12 ago (+2/-0)

I usually use a looper. It's 5 tracks. 4 guitar takes, though it sounds like 1 in the background. And one on the lead. And the bass. I started with a drum track, but wasn't crazy about it, so just deleted it.

[ - ] Sleazy 2 points 8 monthsSep 8, 2023 20:49:23 ago (+2/-0)

That's cool. Looper are fun to play with

[ - ] Hall_of_Cost 2 points 8 monthsSep 9, 2023 13:25:03 ago (+2/-0)

That sounds great and like it's really fun to play. That was a nice recording, I just got some used CAD workstations from 2014. This morning I set one up as a recording computer with ubuntu studio and a mackie profx6. I have some old tape decks but I got the workstations free and want to learn the basics, get some computer recording experience.. What do you use? Now that I see the programs and stuff, I'm thinking I'm in for a mountain of reading and youtube videos. Some of my friends record, I don't know what programs they use but not all of my recording pals have the best mixes. I don't know when I'll actually record songs or albums, but it would be nice to learn. Gonna check if there is a home studio subverse, I'll bet there are a lot of goats that could share or benefit from a subverse like that.

[ - ] MasterSuppressionTechnique 2 points 8 monthsSep 9, 2023 14:46:49 ago (+2/-0)

Well, it's a long road to get the buzzes, pops, clicks and hisses out as an amateur. There are a few ways.

The easiest is to play really loud while the mic sensitivity is turned down.

Then, in post production, "Normalize", each track separately. After you normalize, turn the gain down on each track to get the mix right, but 0.0db gain is too much. Start at -12.

My current recording set up is based on speed with the bare minimum sound quality requirements. I like to sit down and have a track done in less than an hour. "deploy and forget".

This allows me to create way more content and I find that producing 48 tracks quickly gets me 12 tracks I love faster than spending 8 hours per track.

Right now, I've got a bass, electric drum kit and a few guitars that all go into a custom combiner I had Saturnworks pedals make.

Then, the combiner goes into a Boss RC 30 looper. I use this looper merely for clean segments and getting the timing perfect.

Next is the Digitech Trio+. It will do a good job... not great... of generating bass and drums. This has two outs, the instrument out and is generative output. For this reason, I usually use what it generates as a guide for my own bass and drums. I'm not currently doing anything with the generative output other than having it go into a small bass Amp.

The instrument out goes into a Fender Mustang whose amp modeling is controlled via a tablet, to switch back and forth quickly.

From the Fender Mustang, the line then goes into a Hologram Microcosm with looper. This is the primary looper I use, because each track now has its own nuances from the different amp sounds.

This line then goes into the computer where I generally record with Audacity and mix down with Audacity. Or, if I want to play on a nicer amplifier, I'll mic it and plug the mic into the computer.

Right now, the way I have it, is what I prefer to more elaborate setups mainly because I can sit down and have something usable in an hour... something roughly production quality.

Direct input into the computer with so many pedals has generally been problematic and you need to find the right set that won't allow interference. They need to be high quality and your house electricity needs to be grounded right, etc.

That was a great read, thanks for the details man!
