Tonight marks the 6th year anniversary for the Friday Night Guitar Thread! Damned right, we've done this for a long time! In fact, it has been a very long time! Come join us in celebrating. Come share a track. Come sing us a song!

Once again, it's time for the FNGT!

If you don't know how this works, click this link. That link will take you to another site to give you some additional information and tell you about some of our off-site features. That's also the site where we will host the weekly guitar threads, should Talk.lol go down.

NOTE: That site is by invitation only. If you want an invite, ask a regular participant (such as @Sleazy or myself)

If you already know what's going on, you probably don't need to click any of those links. You can still visit to see if any changes have been made, as that's also where we kept the archives and have a second forum.

By the way, we're down to just two of us. If you want to help, let us know.

So, what can I say?

On August 20th, 2017, I asked a simple question on Voat - in the guitar sub. I asked, "Is this where we share our work?" Then, I asked another question, something about if we should do this on a regular basis. It was agreed that we should, though it'd be a while longer before it became a truly weekly event.

We've now surpsassed the 6 year mark. I can't think of any other recurring grassroots event that has gone on this long. It is not without bias that I say this is an excellent thing.

We've held our Friday Night Guitar Thread on various sites over the years. Each time we're evicted, we regroup and find each other again. We've had births and deaths along the way. We've had marriages and seen our children grow into adults. We've done all this while ensuring the thread gets posted every single week - without fail.

It is in that spirit that I decided to play one of the hardest classical pieces I know. It's a Paco de Lucia arrangement, a celebration of life itself.

Zapateado (TB)

Speaking of weddings, we can thank the missus for mixing and recording that. Without her, it'd sound much worse.

So, celebrate the six years we've had and let's look forward to another year.

Rock on, Goats! Rock on!

Amusingly, last week someone had the temerity to say I was a middling guitar player.

Heh... If they only knew. 'Snot bragging, it's just years of hard work. Lemme hear them cover ol' Paco.

Though, there's some interesting history there. Paco kind of held the court for classical guitarists for quite a number of years. If he didn't approve of you, or your guitar choice, you didn't play. So, it sort of stifled the classical guitar scene globally for a bit. If you hadn't sat at his feet to learn, you didn't know enough. So, he was kinda like the mafia don of classical guitar for a while.

middling guitar player

Nah, you're just a rockin' guitar wizard geezer, no need to elevate yourself above us plebs too much.

Congrats on the FNGT anniversary!

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 4 points 8 monthsAug 25, 2023 20:38:23 ago (+4/-0)

LOL Thanks and great to see you! I hope you're staying safe with the fires. We've had one of the wettest summers on record, so I'm grateful for that.

How goes your progress on the church?

[ - ] Rotteuxx 2 points 8 monthsAug 27, 2023 10:41:34 ago (+2/-0)

Luckily the arsonists are only smoking the Ottawa region, not burning it :/

Church renos are halted, all major work is done, interior finishing & landscaping are left. I diverted the funds to a new project, a 1989 F350 w/ 7.3 IDI 5 speed manual, I'll use for mobile welding & end of the world survivalism.

https://files.catbox.moe/t0c2bb.jpg

I'm flatbeding that puppy, thinking of parking my ass at race tracks & marinas for seasonal welding work.

Anything new and interesting in your garage?

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 1 point 8 monthsAug 27, 2023 13:21:00 ago (+1/-0)

That truck does look like it has potential. You might make some good money at the track, especially if you can weld different materials, including structural components.

My garage has blown up. Not literally, but I've moved a lot of money into my car collection. I'm currently beating the stock market with the appreciation. This week, I'm driving a GT-R Nismo - and it's amazing. It's absolutely amazing.

How's Nadeshda holding up?

[ - ] Rotteuxx 0 points 8 monthsAug 30, 2023 15:28:33 ago (+0/-0)

I didn't think you were a fan of japanese import cars, always thought you enjoyed classics for some reason. Well, with the incoming market crash (Not just by Michael Burry, even my boss says all his banking contacts are scared) it's probably a great move to put your money into something physical, let's just hope that the market for resale is advantageous for you later on.

Haven't talked to Nads in a while, she's super busy with her new job and seems to be doing very well personnaly and professionaly.

Also, at the start of the pandemic, I made a declaration. I asserted that I would watch TV until the government officially declared it over.

For the record, I've never been much of a TV or movies kind of guy. I have more important things to do with my time.

I had no idea that it'd take that long, but I was true to my word. I had TV streaming 24/7 (inasmuch as I could) for the entire pandemic. It was as horrible as you can imagine, but I settled on 'true crime' being watchable.

I also used the time to catch up on some must-watch movies, the classics that I'd never seen - both new and old. Again, I did this video streaming 24/7 - even sleeping with TV streaming on the TV in the bedroom.

It would be nice to say that this exercise taught me great things, and in a way it did. It taught me more about society than one might think. I learned the kinds of drivel that people watch are just that, drivel. It's mindless consumption, even on the 'smart' channels that show documentaries.

The repetition surprised me the most. The content wasn't all that great in number, so they'd frequently replay the same shows. Let's just say the pool of content was shallow - though less so with 'true crime'. There's a lot of that content in that genre, which makes sense given the amount of crime we have.

But, after all this, the one truth I've learned - and I'll share this with you 'cause I'm just buzzed enough to type all this absurd gibberish out - is that every movie is improved, or can be improved, by adding Christopher Walken.

So, from now on, when some stupid bastard asks me if I have any life advice, I have something new to add.

[ - ] Rotteuxx 1 point 8 monthsAug 30, 2023 15:35:32 ago (+1/-0)

Sorry to hear that you forcibly rotted your brain during the scamdemic :D

I cut the cord in 2013 and only rely on an ever growing collection of movies and documentaries to watch at home... or just have something playing in the background while I work on my projects.

Now any time I'm visiting someone and the TV is on, well the first thing to strike me is the ''buzz'' given off by normie TVs, anyways, the realisation I always have is how much worse it is than the last time I caught something on TV at a friend's house. They don't even have news casters anymore, just script readers with pre-approved emotions to display on air.

Truly opium for the masses, no matter what channel you watch.

+1 for Christopher Walken, one of the good ones I can admire for his acting skills.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 0 points 8 monthsAug 30, 2023 17:40:49 ago (+0/-0)

It was an enlightening, albeit often painful, experience.

But, I'm a man of my word. So, I watched TV for the entire time.

It did make me a bit curious and now that I don't have to watch TV I can watch other stuff. Like, I finally watched Scarface for the first time. All the movies that folks know and love mean nothing to me, 'cause I never watched them.

Though, I do have some movies I've watched. I like Kubrick's work. Tim Burton is usually good. Movies with Bruce Willis are often alright. I did watch every single James Bond movie, more or less in order. That was alright.

[ - ] Hand_Of_Node 4 points 8 monthsAug 26, 2023 00:08:09 ago (+4/-0)

someone had the temerity to say I was a middling guitar player.

Pretty sure they meant to say National Treasure!

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 3 points 8 monthsAug 26, 2023 12:02:31 ago (+3/-0)

Ah, it's okay. They kinda amuse me. At this point in my career, that is happily retired, I get to look back on my accomplishments and be pleased.

I've invested a whole lot of time into learning to play guitar. I'm not convinced that it's special or that I'm somehow special. I just invested a bunch of time. I figure anyone can do it, so long as they have discipline and a willingness to spend the time.

Though, I do kind of want a parade.

[ - ] popticalillusion 1 point 8 monthsAug 26, 2023 16:55:03 ago (+1/-0)

A parade where there are hay wagons, or flat bed trailers, with contending guitar players being judged by a panel who either upgoat or downgoat?

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 1 point 8 monthsAug 26, 2023 17:45:25 ago (+1/-0)

Oh, I'm not too picky. I just love parades. I own cars just for the purpose of driving them in parades. They don't get driven anywhere else, just parades. Much of the time, they're not even driven to the parade. They get towed to the parade and then driven in the parade.

I fricken' love parades.

You Are a middling guitar player. Your opening to this thread has proven exactly everything I said. This thread is terrible. Again.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 5 points 8 monthsAug 25, 2023 20:32:47 ago (+5/-0)

LOL You amuse me. You should stick around.

[ - ] TheViciousMrPim 1 point 8 monthsAug 25, 2023 20:39:38 ago (+2/-1)

So I can what? Hear what?

You know I'm right.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 8 points 8 monthsAug 25, 2023 20:42:37 ago (+8/-0)

I'm literally one of the best guitar players on the planet. Literally.

I tell you what...

You go record you playing Zapateado. When you're done, you're qualified to have an opinion.

Until then, you're dismissed. Try again next week!

[ - ] TheViciousMrPim 2 points 8 monthsAug 25, 2023 20:51:35 ago (+3/-1)

So, you have nothing interesting to post? You're going to post yet another poorly done cover.

Where I'm from artist make art. Original pieces.

It's how they measure themselves. Real art is hard. It isn't made by copying others. That shit is practice.

[ - ] big_fat_dangus 0 points 8 monthsAug 26, 2023 07:22:41 ago (+1/-1)

mrpim is seething with jealousy yet again. Join me in laughing at his dumb boomer ass.

Thats beautiful

Happy Anniversary

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 5 points 8 monthsAug 25, 2023 20:37:22 ago (+5/-0)

Of course it is! LOL

Thanks and happy anniversary to you too!

It has been a long six years. That's a whole lot of music that has been shared.

[ - ] Sleazy 4 points 8 monthsAug 25, 2023 20:39:03 ago (+4/-0)

I enjoyed every single minute of it!

We never-ending had a fight!

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 2 points 8 monthsAug 26, 2023 12:38:26 ago (+2/-0)

You've got some tracks to catch up on that you missed last night. We had a bunch of 'em shared with us!

[ - ] Sleazy 1 point 8 monthsAug 26, 2023 13:15:29 ago (+1/-0)

I will have to take a look, that sounds like an awesome development!

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 1 point 8 monthsAug 26, 2023 15:08:26 ago (+1/-0)

Indeed! Lots of folks showed up after I went to bed. It was slow, so I went to bed. I came online and my inbox was on fire. This pleased me.

[ - ] Sleazy 1 point 8 monthsAug 26, 2023 15:21:19 ago (+1/-0)

I got kidnapped by a drunk friend last night who needed a driver

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 1 point 8 monthsAug 26, 2023 15:35:19 ago (+1/-0)

Ah, I just went to bed.

[ - ] Sleazy 1 point 8 monthsAug 26, 2023 15:47:26 ago (+1/-0)

I usually say yes to nearly any adventure

[ - ] popticalillusion 4 points 8 monthsAug 25, 2023 20:22:38 ago (+4/-0)

Awesome playing and great sound! I was a little worried that I wouldn't have good sound quality using my phone connected via Bluetooth to the hearing aids, but that one was really clear!
I love classical music, believe it or not, and enjoy when you all post these.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 5 points 8 monthsAug 25, 2023 20:36:30 ago (+5/-0)

This week's track is a bitch to play, but it's fun when you nail it. It's not the most complicated classical piece I know, but it's up there. I figured it was the anniversary, so I'd do something special for the thread.

Glad ya liked it. Sadly, I'm not sure where the tab is for that song. I'm sure you could find it out there somewhere but I have that one stored in memory. Though, it did take a couple of attempts before I could remember the how to finish it.

Most of the time I nail it in a single take. That comes from my studio work. The client is paying for studio time and paying by the hour, so they love it if you can nail it the first time through.

[ - ] popticalillusion 5 points 8 monthsAug 25, 2023 20:57:42 ago (+5/-0)

Out of habit I tend to analyze the playing technique as I listen, but I would definitely need Tabs to catch all the notes.

I get where you're coming from about studio work. I'm just glad I can do the recordings at home now, where I can take my time and retake the track if I mangle it. 🤣 The demos I played on were recorded live in the studio and I think there was only one song I overdubbed an additional lead. They definitely like to get the recordings without too much time spent driving up the costs. 🙂

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 5 points 8 monthsAug 25, 2023 21:09:47 ago (+5/-0)

It was seldom enough money to really do anything with, but I did studio work as a source of supplemental income.

I ended up doing a lot of radio jingles, commercials, etc... I was on the occasional local band's album but that was it. I did hit the studio with numerous bands, but that was different. We were paying to be there, rather than being paid. I'd sometimes do the studio work when the band's guitarist couldn't nail it.

At one point I had a recording contract with a major record label, but we never went beyond the first album - which wasn't recorded by the studio but was recorded on our dime in another studio. It didn't end well.

I don't regret it. The guitar has opened all sorts of doors and I've experienced things few other people will experience.

[ - ] Hand_Of_Node 3 points 8 monthsAug 26, 2023 00:25:04 ago (+3/-0)

Guitar TAB (tablature) is a form of musical notation in which notes are represented by numbers showing the fret at which the the string should be held down in order for that note to sound. The numbers are positioned on horizontal lines which represent the strings of a guitar.

Ah, looks helpful.

[ - ] Hall_of_Cost 4 points 8 monthsAug 26, 2023 02:52:41 ago (+4/-0)*

When I got out of the joint, I was happy to see voat was still bleating. I noticed no guitar thread, but then you came back! And yeah I'm usually a bit late but I still appreciate this and I love how long we've been checking out each other's tunes. Did I [try to show my pathetic attempt or] play Layla on my first share? Or maybe I shared this:

https://m.soundcloud.com/user-81408208/voice-024

Which I was a raging drunk back then and Buddha asked what I played that song on. I told him it was my epiphone les paul special II through a peavey rage all knobs at 10. And he replied something like, "Sounds like it!" Lmao! I still get a kick out of that

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 1 point 8 monthsAug 26, 2023 12:05:16 ago (+1/-0)

We were on Poal for a while, as they were the most stable.

I pointed out that they had censored this domain name, so the dear leader decided I was a "pedo apologist" and nuked my account.

At the time, we'd already discussed moving here. So, we moved here. We've held the thread on all sorts of different sites over the years.

Also, welcome back from jail. I hope you weren't in there for too long.

[ - ] popticalillusion 1 point 8 monthsAug 26, 2023 17:08:09 ago (+1/-0)

It's pretty cool. When I hear guitar parts like this , I hear what I imagine would be some good bass and drums playing in my head. LOL Great stuff!

[ - ] Hall_of_Cost 0 points 8 monthsAug 26, 2023 22:47:41 ago (+0/-0)

Thank you - I listen to it every now and then. It's weird, I was drinking so much back then. It's sad I wasted all that time but I picked up and moved on. Much improved since those days... just my life mostly but I maybe got a little better at guitar. I feel better at it at least, but I'd need lessons or someone to play with regularly to jam with and grow with to get to where I want to be. I'm considering lessons once I pay off all this gear. Still a jelly fingered player, need to tighten it up imo. Thanks again!

[ - ] Hand_Of_Node 3 points 8 monthsAug 26, 2023 00:28:03 ago (+3/-0)

Same day Jerry Lewis died at 91 years old. France probably went into morning, if France was still France at the time.

I am so impressed all the time in this thread. That was amazing! Thanks for sharing that!

Not much but it's more than I've done in years. Been lurking for awhile so I guess I should post more which I guess means I need to put my rig back together. Always love what folks post.

There's no place like G28

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 3 points 8 monthsAug 26, 2023 11:53:40 ago (+3/-0)

Nice! Thanks for sharing!

And, yeah, you can/should post more. We're here every Friday, for some definition of 'here'. We started a long time ago on Voat and have ended up hosting the thread on all sorts of different sites over the years. But, we find a spot and host the thread every week.

[ - ] Hall_of_Cost 2 points 8 monthsAug 26, 2023 03:19:12 ago (+2/-0)

Wow man that was great! Can't wait to hear more!

The intro section sounds like something RHCP would use as an intro and I don't believe I've heard it before.

It's great to see you and it has been a while indeed. We're still here. We're still jamming.

Happy anniversary goats! Here's a couple of videos of me messing with my (new to me) amp the night I brought it home. Ome video is blind melon deserted intro, the other is some riffs I'm hoping to string into a song for Space Weapon a little project I'm doing to learn some basic recording stuff and I just like concept albums and after I heard Time by ELO, I always wanted to make my own concept album. I'd heard other concept albums like from pink Floyd and The Kinks, even Lord Huron. Check out Time though it's an interesting and underrated album. Also a little thin lizzy dicking around at the end of that one.

For some reason, the first one doesn't play for me. Well, it plays for a second or two and then stops. The second one made it through. Sweet!

And, yeah, it has been a lot of years. I never thought we'd be doing this six years later.

[ - ] Hall_of_Cost 1 point 8 monthsAug 26, 2023 22:37:53 ago (+1/-0)

Thanks bro :) and yeah it was 3 years. I am happy to be back, out for almost 2 now and after about 6months of freedom I got back in- rehooked to guitar like when i was first trying it out. Basically all i do outside of work is focused on music. I love that my hobbies are fixing/modding guitars pedals Amps and things when I'm not playing. It kept me constantly thinking about my* tone at first. Hadn't found it yet, I was tone hounding. I think I settled it though, found my sweetspot in the Vibrolux and my pedals.

I'm thinking of getting an attenuator or something. Have you used anything like that? Do you think it's worth it? Seems I can get decent tone from my rig (the BF vibrolux) even at lower volumes with a couple of pedals.

An attenuator is great if you have a big amp and want to play at bedroom volume levels. I've owned a variety of them over the years. I haven't used them, but I've bought them. They're one of those things I keep planning on using someday, but never really need to.

If I were in your shoes, I'd consider something like a Fender Mustang Micro or even a dirt cheap headphone amp. You can do just fine with a cheap-ass headphone amp and it'll sound more than good enough for you to practice with.

And, if you're not interested in one for those reasons, I'm not sure why you'd want one in the first place. They're really only good for that.

Having hours to focus on music is a good thing - in many ways. But, there's more to it than that. Life is too short to spend all of your time playing guitar. You've gotta find some friends - though it could be friends you jam with.

That link wasn't working for me yesterday but it is now. I think maybe catbox was having troubles. It's also possible that your internet hates guitars, which ain't cool.

I got mad at my DSL provider. So, I've been using a mobile hotspot for a couple of years now. The problem is, I can only ping one tower. I also have satellite, but they suck worse than the hotspot. So, my connection is pretty sporadic and spotty. Much of the time, it works good enough. I don't have high bandwidth needs. Then, other times, it's a frustrating mess that pisses me off - but not as much as the DSL provider. They can fuck right off. They're lucky that I don't go to their nearest office and set that bitch on fire.

That sounds cool. I like the sound of your guitar. Are you using an effect? It sounds real nice

Holy smokes! I didn't know you hit 6 years. Nice going Buddha.

You ever play Chicago's 25 or 6 to 4?

I mentioned like a hundred years ago that's the best solo I ever heard. I still think it is. The dude blew himself away play Russian Rulet. Fuck I can't spell rulet, rullet, ruelet. Fuck English.

Yeah I know of that dude Paco. But I never listened to his stuff.

Yup. We're at the six year mark! (It slowed down so I meandered off to bed.)

I have covered the song before, but not in years. It was a pretty popular song in the 80s.

Technically, we're just over the six year mark. So, we're already working on the 7th year! I'm biased, but that seems like a good feat to me.
