Need some tool advice.

submitted by usedoilanalysis to cars 1.8 yearsAug 18, 2023 08:22:55 ago (+6/-0)     (cars)

I'm looking for a small compact electric wrench that can get into tight spaces. Would I be better off with a right angle impact, an electric ratchet, a stubby 3/8ths, or a 1/4" impact driver? I have a mid and a high torque for transmission, suspension and subframe work, but don't like using that for front end stuff, or brakes because 1 they don't fit, or 2 those small bolts will get snapped at the head from the big boy torque.

The electric ratchets/right-angle impacts are freaking amazing and if you do ANY amount of wrenching you will greatly appreciate them.

I only have 1 Milwaukee 12V ratchet and it feels like a life-changer when working in the garage.

I really like my Milwaukee Fuel M12 ratchet. I wish it had a little more torque but it does pretty well with about 55foot pounds. The nice thing about it is that it does ratchet so you can apply manual torque to break nuts loose. Saves a lot of time especially in spaces with limited swing

Yeah that's what I'm gravitating towards. A ratchet is slim and I can break the bolts loose with it then run them off. Just wondering if a impact driver or stubby impact could work similarly.

If you're a professional (working in a shop), go with Milwaukee. If you're working on home projects, have a look at Ryobi (for all the shit this brand gets, it's still pretty good for home use).

I have a bunch of dewalt batteries and chargers so I will only buy dewalt tools. Convenience is a stronger drug than heroin.

DeWalt is great. I have a few of those. If you’ve standardized on that then stick with it. Good choice.

This is why I buy plug-ins.

all of them, but the electric ratchet is prolly the most useful, after the pneumatic one

I spend waaaay too much money every time I go into Harbor Freight. I wiosh that place had been around back in the 80's and 90's.

I sold my air compressor and air tools, I'm going electric. The only thing I need an air compressor for is an air hammer, which is slowly being replaced by my electric reciprocating saw, rotary drill and welder.

u will always need a compressor for the air-blowing ability

The space a compressor takes up, the lines, the water separator, and extra maintenance makes it impractical to have one personally. I rather modify a leaf blower to blast leaves and stuff out of an engine bay or dry stuff.

I know Milwaukee makes the gold standard of impact drivers, but you make a good point about breaking bolts.

I like Milwaukee, and I'd buy their tools if I didn't have like 6 dewalt 20v batteries, so I have to limit my tools to work with that.

I wish i liked dewalt. I had some bad experiences. I bent up a fucking cro-bar! Who does that? I think some other things were also junk so I lost interest. Then again, I think most of those companies are selling garbage. Rigid was pretty good for quality and price.

Look up which tool companies are owned by whom.

I prefer Makita because they're the only ones, aside from Hilti, that own themselves.

I did at one point which is why I got disenfranchised with so many of them. My makita tools have held up. Porter cable too. Then again, i have been beating the shit out of a black and decker drill for the last 13 years. Not sure why that one is still around.

My Dewalt mid torque pulled the crank pulley bolt on a Honda without a weighted socket. The thing is an absolute beast.

I usually rely on my universal sockets and my stubby 3/8 to be honest but I don't do much automotive work any more.
