The number of scientific papers retracted annually rose from just 40 in 2000 to almost 5,500 in 2022, representing a whopping 13,650% change over the past 22 years, with researchers estimating an astonishing 100,000 would have to be withdrawn every year with more thorough vetting.
The number of retractions alone isn't very meaningful when it isn't normalized by the amount of total publications. Furthermore, the bigger scams aren't retracted because the journals are controlled by the usual suspects responsible for the scam.
I really doubt that the number of scientific publications in that period has gone up by 13,650%. And if it has, that’s probably also worth investigating. Productivity levels don’t tend to go up that quickly.
I trust science, because science is repeatable and doesn't care about anyone's beliefs. Science can be captured, cataloged and dissected. If a study can't be repeated, it's not science. It's just an attempt to pass off beliefs as truth. Most studies are wishful thinking and nothing else.
