Authority absolutely MUST balance with duties and responsibilities. It MUST be acountable. Or you get what we've got now.

The art of leadership is to take a group of people and raise them up to the highest standard of performance of which they are capable, both individually and as a team, and then hold them there at that level for as long as possible.

The only real difference between ordinary and extraordinary is just that little bit "extra".

An NCO's job is about "brilliance in the fundamentals". Nothing fancy. Just training, standards and accountability. I wasn't either an 'asshole' or a 'nice guy'. I was just firm and fair. The regs are the regs and the standards are the standards. I don't make them, I just, by God, enforce them.

If you just consistently follow the regs and meet, or better, exceed the standards (and I will teach you how to do both) then surely goodness and mercy shall follow you all the days of your life, and you shall dwell in the safe harbor of the Ol' Sarge's good will.

Do these things not and thou shalt be a shitbag and shall surely be cast into the outer darkness, where thou shalt wail, gnash thy teeth, rend thy clothing, and heap ashes upon thy head until thou dost repent of thy sins and return to the strait and narrow way.

Put me in charge at Ft. Hood for three months. And I would start by creating a scorched abrasion on the Earth's crust where whatever currently passes for "leadership" there once stood. First thing, day one, Monday morning, 0630hrs.
