I asked "On the inside or outside?"
So he walks out the front door, comes back in and says "both".

Moments like this has me wondering if Im saving too much for college.

If he is under 10 this is not much of an indicator of intelligence. This is probably your fault for failing to teach him or explain properly. If you said "does the inside of your ear hurt or the outer part of your ear?". You would be speaking properly and thoroughly explaining yourself and he wouldn't be confused.
