It's about supporting rebels, people who thought outside the box, people that in some way challenged big bad hierarchies - the institutions that do most of the real bad in the world. You think Sade was bad? He wrote books. Government did the bad. They locked him up for writing them.
One thing to be learned from Marxists and Marxist regimes is how they put history to service of ideology. In picking the men I did it is with a view to addressing current problems, not looking to an idealized past that probably didn't even really exist.
