Most issues seem to arise from a lack of a masculine presence in a boy's life. Family can only go so far; after adolescence guys need to find ways to make friends. Forced shared experiences (high school / college / military) will only offer a certain window to build adult friendships.
When you're in your 20s, it beneficial if you're able to make adult friends a decade or so older than you so you can see how their life is working and if you want to implement pieces into your life. It's harder when you're in your 30s and 40s to help the young adults, but your time is likely preoccupied with your own kids.
I had an Uncle who was the black sheep of the family. In and out of jail for stupid shit, substance abuse etc. HOWEVER,he spoke the truth to me when I was a kid. He warned to never relax around blacks and didn't try to bullshit me or hold back saying the truth just because I was a kid. He was a little abusive but I really believe it was to toughen me up.

Honestly, I think the answer is violence. In a society that's permitted everyone's experience to enter such a simulated territory (when things are safe and abundant, we tend to drift as a civilization into more and more detached abstracta), you need the occasional upset to bring everyone back down to earth.
