Hmm... Did you check a calendar today? If so, do you know that it's Friday? If you know that it's Friday, you should also know that it's time for the Friday Night Guitar Thread! It's time to rock out with your peers!

submitted by TheRealBuddha to Guitar 10 monthsJul 21, 2023 19:54:02 ago (+23/-2)     (Guitar)

Once again, it's time for the FNGT!

If you don't know how this works, click this link. That link will take you to another site to give you some additional information and tell you about some of our off-site features. That's also the site where we will host the weekly guitar threads, should Talk.lol go down.

NOTE: That site is by invitation only. If you want an invite, ask a regular participant (such as @Sleazy or myself)

If you already know what's going on, you probably don't need to click any of those links. You can still visit to see if any changes have been made, as that's also where we kept the archives and have a second forum.

By the way, we're down to just two of us. If you want to help, let us know.

How about a blast from the past? Below is the exact submission we made back in the day...

-----------

Once again, I have no idea how long I'll be with you tonight. It kinda depends on how my granddaughter is doing and how I am doing. I have a baby!

This week, be prepared to have your socks knocked off as The EH & TB Band cover RHCP's Soul To Squeeze!

https://clyp.it/n5x5m02s?token=f8d32fc699b6d775271efae7e9aa1189

If you listen carefully, you'll hear EH doing the rhythm (that's the first guitar you'll hear) and then later doing a second backing track where she also covers part of the lead. This is not an easy song to learn and she learned it with remarkable speed.

"I started to learn it on Sunday. It didn't even take many hours!"

Yeah, yeah... Go ahead and just ignore the guy that covered the lead and also covered one of the greatest bassists on the planet. Just give her her damned roses and I'll type on her behalf. It's okay, I'm used to it! ;-)

This is my guitar student in whom I am well pleased. Yes, yes I am.

Rock on, goats. Rock on!

------------

As it says, rock on!

That sounds fucking great!

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 3 points 10 monthsJul 21, 2023 20:47:00 ago (+3/-0)

That was from a long time ago. It seemed fitting as I still have some of my original FNGT starting texts. I've saved them for years, all in one giant text file.

[ - ] ChatGPT 4 points 10 monthsJul 21, 2023 23:42:58 ago (+4/-0)

That was beautiful rhythm guitar playing. My compliments to your girl.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 1 point 10 monthsJul 22, 2023 13:56:44 ago (+1/-0)

She's got some legit skills considering how long she's been playing. She's been at it for about five years, but she's pretty dedicated to learning and practicing.

That track was from quite a while ago, like November of 2019.

[ - ] Vrbllpollushin 3 points 10 monthsJul 21, 2023 21:31:24 ago (+3/-0)

That was excellent.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 2 points 10 monthsJul 21, 2023 21:35:00 ago (+2/-0)

Thanks! Glad ya liked it!

[ - ] popticalillusion 2 points 10 monthsJul 21, 2023 21:13:40 ago (+2/-0)

I am very impressed with her playing abilities! her teacher must be very smart in the ways of instructing the talented student he has there. This is a very cool song in itself, where the bass line can stand so well on it's own. Great work!

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 2 points 10 monthsJul 21, 2023 21:31:53 ago (+2/-0)

LOL I am her teacher and she more or less self-studies at this point.

[ - ] Sleazy 5 points 10 monthsJul 21, 2023 20:20:25 ago (+5/-0)

The other night my woman was plucking at the banjo here and I told her I was going to record what she was playing for the FNGT!

So I played along with all the instruments I could find laying around the dining room table!

Lets Play Land Shark

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 5 points 10 monthsJul 21, 2023 20:24:07 ago (+5/-0)

I don't think this is a compliment, but it sounds like something I'd expect to hear Yoko Ono caterwauling over.

I opened the thread a little early, just in case my network decided to fuck me in the arse.

[ - ] Sleazy 4 points 10 monthsJul 21, 2023 20:25:34 ago (+4/-0)

I was the one making the noise, she was just plucking

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 4 points 10 monthsJul 21, 2023 20:46:00 ago (+4/-0)

I was counting the plucking as noise as well. LOL

No mercy!

[ - ] Sleazy 3 points 10 monthsJul 21, 2023 20:59:12 ago (+3/-0)

LoL

I asked her if she wanted to play land shark but I dont think she knows what that is

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 2 points 10 monthsJul 21, 2023 21:04:05 ago (+2/-0)

Well, it could be worse. It could be just banging on pots and pans or drunken singing.

[ - ] Sleazy 4 points 10 monthsJul 21, 2023 21:11:51 ago (+4/-0)

Maybe next time!

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 2 points 10 monthsJul 21, 2023 21:13:21 ago (+2/-0)

Life is short. So, you only get so many chances to just have fun.

[ - ] Sleazy 3 points 10 monthsJul 21, 2023 21:16:23 ago (+3/-0)

I try to take all the opportunities that are presented!

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 1 point 10 monthsJul 21, 2023 21:34:12 ago (+1/-0)

Damned right!

[ - ] popticalillusion 3 points 10 monthsJul 21, 2023 21:40:46 ago (+3/-0)

That shit Yoko recorded was horrible. I would say that the "songs' really make you wish you could choke her to shut her up. LOL

[ - ] ChatGPT 3 points 10 monthsJul 21, 2023 23:23:04 ago (+3/-0)

Yoko was a fucking bitch and Lennon was pussy whipped. WTF. On his comeback album, Double Fantasy, he had his songs and her screeching shit alternating. It sucked man.

You wanna listen to the album? Good luck, you were forced to listen to that bitch's "songs." No man you couldn't playlist or program the record. So you had to get up, move the fucking needle to skip her fucking garbage and go back and chill to listen to the album.

They couldn't put Lennon's songs on one side and her shit on the other side.

Fucking jews sure know how to fuck you.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 2 points 10 monthsJul 21, 2023 21:45:22 ago (+2/-0)

I am not a Yoko fan. It was a tongue in cheek slight given.

[ - ] popticalillusion 3 points 10 monthsJul 21, 2023 21:38:17 ago (+3/-0)

I was thinking it has the vibe of the early Pink Floyd days with Syd Barrett. He was extremely experimental and sometimes just weird. I think that making an effort to create something out of this banjo plucking was pretty good. It may not be pretty and polished, but it does create a psychedelic kind of vibe.

[ - ] Sleazy 1 point 10 monthsJul 21, 2023 21:58:05 ago (+1/-0)

Yeah I thought it had a vibe to it too

[ - ] recon_johnny 4 points 10 monthsJul 21, 2023 23:19:45 ago (+4/-0)

I f@cking keep missing this.

Not that I play well at all, but would like to listen to others.

Hell, I don’t play songs, just strum chords I think sounds somewhat nice together.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 3 points 10 monthsJul 22, 2023 05:25:35 ago (+3/-0)

You can listen or share still. You'll get some activity all weekend.

Or, if you prefer, we'll be here next week and the same time and in the same channel.

[ - ] Sleazy 2 points 10 monthsJul 22, 2023 02:51:05 ago (+2/-0)

You can listen now

[ - ] popticalillusion 1 point 9 monthsJul 24, 2023 04:57:40 ago (+1/-0)

I think attempting to post something each week has improved my playing a bit. I really think my biggest gains is in learning to use these digital tools I have to do my recordings and the process of posting them to share with others.

If you run out of things to listen to you can go to the FNGT Archives located on this site.

I'm sure if you keep coming back people can point you to resources and give you ideas to keep improving your skills.

[ - ] Sleazy 4 points 10 monthsJul 21, 2023 20:43:46 ago (+4/-0)

My woman found this little electric kids piano that has music box sound when you play it.

What the Fuck, Man?

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 4 points 10 monthsJul 21, 2023 20:48:11 ago (+4/-0)

Oh, it's one of those that predated electronic piano kid toys where it hits a chime when you press the key?

[ - ] Sleazy 2 points 10 monthsJul 21, 2023 20:58:35 ago (+2/-0)

Its a miniature grand piano that runs on batteries and one of the sound choices is music box. It also has piano, trumpet, sax, guitar, flute, and violin sounds

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 3 points 10 monthsJul 21, 2023 21:03:18 ago (+3/-0)

It sounds like one of the mechanical keyboards you gave kids back in the day.

They had no other tones. LOL We're talking kids toys up until the 70s - maybe the 80s - but definitely coming from the 50s or even earlier with some iterations.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 3 points 10 monthsJul 21, 2023 21:32:45 ago (+3/-0)

Yeah, that's not like the old ones I was picturing.

[ - ] Sleazy 2 points 10 monthsJul 21, 2023 22:00:08 ago (+2/-0)

I figured a photo would help more than trying to describe it

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 2 points 10 monthsJul 22, 2023 13:53:44 ago (+2/-0)

Indeed...

Is that beemer?

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 1 point 10 monthsJul 22, 2023 17:44:56 ago (+1/-0)

Yeah, it's a 3 series decked out for rally.

I can neither confirm nor deny that it's a car I've driven.

[ - ] ChatGPT 3 points 10 monthsJul 21, 2023 23:32:50 ago (+3/-0)

She got Shroeder's piano. He's a pretty good piano player.

[ - ] Sleazy 1 point 10 monthsJul 22, 2023 02:49:58 ago (+1/-0)

way better than me. Though I did write this classical piece five years ago or so

[ - ] popticalillusion 1 point 9 monthsJul 24, 2023 05:13:44 ago (+1/-0)

That's really good actually! Quite different from what I've heard of your music so far. I love piano mixed with metal, which gave me Savatage as one of my favorite groups. I look forward to more of your use of different instruments. I want a keyboard, but I already said I wouldn't spend money on one until I was more comfortable with my ability to consistently produce some kind of musical recordings.

[ - ] popticalillusion 3 points 10 monthsJul 21, 2023 21:24:51 ago (+3/-0)

That's pretty cool! You could make up all kinds of stuff to add to some of your recordings.

[ - ] Sleazy 2 points 10 monthsJul 21, 2023 21:26:51 ago (+2/-0)

Thats what I was thinking!

[ - ] ChatGPT 3 points 10 monthsJul 21, 2023 23:17:42 ago (+3/-0)

Laters Tony Bennett.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 1 point 10 monthsJul 22, 2023 05:23:39 ago (+1/-0)

We will be here next week. Have a good one.

[ - ] popticalillusion 3 points 10 monthsJul 21, 2023 20:58:35 ago (+3/-0)

I went back to my very first song and used an AI tool from Bandlabs to extract the vocals, bass, and drums from the original recording. I added the tracks to my guitar recording and then done some work syncing the tracks and improving the way they sound. Stone Temple Pilots Plush from the Core release.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 3 points 10 monthsJul 21, 2023 21:05:05 ago (+3/-0)

That's a pretty neat tool. I'm kinda impressed with the results.

[ - ] popticalillusion 2 points 10 monthsJul 21, 2023 21:20:32 ago (+2/-0)

It's much better than trying to use the Guitar Pro tracks because I start off with better quality in them. I could work well in modifying them with effects as opposed to my parts that were like trying to polish a turd. LOL. I could take another shot at recording them again, but my gear is packed up and I wanted to show what could be done with my original recordings to improve the sound.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 3 points 10 monthsJul 21, 2023 21:34:42 ago (+3/-0)

It'd be nice if they made a Linux version.

[ - ] popticalillusion 2 points 10 monthsJul 21, 2023 21:44:24 ago (+2/-0)

I agree, but it does work well using WINE. The AI tools are online, as well as an online DAW at Bandlabs if you would prefer that over an install.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 3 points 10 monthsJul 21, 2023 21:46:11 ago (+3/-0)

Huh... I'd read that the whole thing didn't work properly in Wine.

[ - ] popticalillusion 3 points 10 monthsJul 21, 2023 21:53:09 ago (+3/-0)

That could be true. I just started using their DAW about a month ago, and have yet to do any recording with it because I was having trouble getting my USB mic to work. But, I can say for certain that the mixing and editing works fine on my system. WINE can be tricky sometimes when you're trying to get your programs to work, so I bet the issue is probably within that area.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 2 points 10 monthsJul 21, 2023 23:53:35 ago (+2/-0)

I'll try to remember to try it.
