Religious behavior is just moral behavior at the group level. They evolved together and are essentially the same thing.
Perhaps a tribe succeeds in a new environment because most of the members are predisposed to monogamy. They form a group policy that everyone should be monogamous to manage the genetic outliers. People invent a religious narrative to explain or justify a moral policy, because they don’t understand evolution. So they say Yahweh or Dyeus or whoever wants them to be monogamous. It really doesnt matter.
Everyones brain works like this. People with 140 IQ and people with 80 IQ. A person is programmed with genetics to be altruistic or opportunistic. Thats where their morals come from. High IQ alllows some highly exploitive people to manipulate cultural institutions to parasitize others through elaborate deception. Why should anyone determine their own morals? People are born with a moral program based on what worked for their ancestors. That moral program needs a religious culture in which to work properly. Religious behavior is completely ubiquitous in all societies. There are no groups of humans that dont do it. Even atheists do it. Its a key part of how morality works. Morality, religion, economics, law — all these concepts are deeply intertwined. There’s no point in morals without a group policy. Anyone that has taken time to study the Bible will know exactly why I brought up the passage about the Unknown God.
It is the Biblical perspective that nonIsraelites also worshipped the God of the Bible but just didn't understand what they were worshipping. Just as much as the OT Israelites had a veiled understanding of the truth of God, so too did the Greek (and implicitly all other nations and peoples). The truth of Christ was revealed to the Jews first and then the rest of the world afterward.
If you look at the works of Greeks like Plato (particularly in works like The Republic), you can see how this concept of an All-God was present.
Your premise was that our ancestors allegedly did not hold the same truths, but from the Christian Bible the perspective is that our ancestors (whether Israelite or nonIsraelite) did hold the truth of God in their heart but just did not understand the details that had not been revealed.
