You're supposed to go for it's nose. That's a highly sensitive spot and she's probably heard a million times in bear country to hit the nose as hard as you can
It's entirely plausible. It was probably a young and inexperienced black bear in her case.
Striking a black bear or shark on their snout is something you hear about but it's not exactly advisable BUT if you're being attacked by either, fight back. With a grizzly you back down, play dead, etc.
