The time is right and it is Friday night, that means it's the Friday Night Guitar Thread! Come join us in sharing the music that we make! We want to hear you play something. It doesn't even have to be good. Make some noise. Join the fun!

Once again, it's time for the FNGT!

If you don't know how this works, click this link. That link will take you to another site to give you some additional information and tell you about some of our off-site features. That's also the site where we will host the weekly guitar threads, should Talk.lol go down.

NOTE: That site is by invitation only. If you want an invite, ask a regular participant (such as @TheRealBuddha or myself)

If you already know what's going on, you probably don't need to click any of those links. You can still visit to see if any changes have been made, as that's also where we kept the archives and have a second forum.

By the way, we're down to just two of us. If you want to help, let us know.

Hello again everybody. Since it is now Summer. You need to get a whole bunch of beer, and invite all your friends over, and all get drunk in your Backyard

[ - ] TheRealBuddha 1 point 1.9 yearsJun 23, 2023 20:18:09 ago (+1/-0)

Nice! I recognize that song!

I also like the Trans Am hood.

I may be the only one who notices that.

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 1 point 1.9 yearsJun 23, 2023 20:20:31 ago (+1/-0)

There are two Trans Am hoods!

[ - ] TheRealBuddha 1 point 1.9 yearsJun 23, 2023 20:37:37 ago (+1/-0)

Yup. I forgot to make it plural. I'm kinda dodging between connections. The cell tower went out (even with the power on - at least here), so I tried the satellite connection.

That was so painfully slow that I waited a few minutes and tried the cell connection again. This time, it worked.

I have a whopping 2.5 Mb/sec going on here.

Oddly, that's enough for what I do - unless I'm wanting a quick download or to upload anything.

Oh cool a video! Great work! That would be good times right there. Friends, beer, and music are some of the funnest times I had playing.

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 1 point 1.9 yearsJun 23, 2023 21:12:26 ago (+1/-0)

Those are some of the best times!

This farmer I used to work for let us camp on a secluded part of his property. It started with the friends, a beer keg, and music and we camped throughout the summer. Later he added a shelter and electrical supply to it. The local bluegrass band became the regular guests, and then eventually turned into a yearly weekend event Happy Valley Bluegrass Festival

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 1 point 1.9 yearsJun 23, 2023 21:57:31 ago (+1/-0)

That is so awesome! Super cool!

[ - ] TheRealBuddha 3 points 1.9 yearsJun 23, 2023 20:05:05 ago (+3/-0)

My mains power keeps going off and then coming back on.

That normally doesn't impact me, except the nearest cell tower seems to have a faulty backup power process. So, when the power drains from the battery they use, that means my cell connection is dead - as there are no closer towers.

I have better battery storage (and energy redundancy) than they do - quite literally. I can power my whole goddamned house in perpetuity, assuming I keep generating power and my storage is adequate. Right now, you could cut off my power, disconnect the wind turbine, remove the solar, and I'd still have power for a week.

I have a huge house! Literally, I have better redundancy than they do.

Anyhow...

So, how about a track without any guitar? That sounds like a good idea! This time, you can listen to me drum. If you're careful, you can count along with it. If you do so, you'll see the challenges associated. I wasn't just randomly smashing drums.

Riding With The Metro Gnome

Due to a recording error, that was cut off partway through and the rest is lost to history. So, it is what it is.

Enjoy and rock on Goats! Rock on!

Thanks to @sleazy for opening the thread. They may be busy for a while.

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 3 points 1.9 yearsJun 23, 2023 20:08:26 ago (+3/-0)

Sounds great! How often do you practice at the drums. I know you practice your guitar playing every day. Do you play the drums every day as well?

You should get your own cell tower! LoL

[ - ] TheRealBuddha 3 points 1.9 yearsJun 23, 2023 20:16:55 ago (+3/-0)

Glad ya liked it and thanks for the compliment.

I would let them put a cell tower on the property. They pay pretty well for that, by the way. They'll pay up to $10k a month, maybe even more, for some locations. That's on the high end and for a coveted property. I think I once read that the average is $600 a month. So, that'd be $7200 a year.

I don't practice drumming nearly enough. I might get in an hour or two of practice every week. That'd why I need a few minutes to warm up first, whereas I can pick up a guitar and play it in the dark, regardless of string length.

So, when you hear me drum, you can be certain that I warmed up first. I have a lot of drumming experience. Indeed, it was my first instrument. But, I don't practice nearly enough.

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 2 points 1.9 yearsJun 23, 2023 20:21:44 ago (+2/-0)

I was wondering if you put in time on the drum kit every day like you do guitar for a while now. I just always forgot to ask you. Thanks for reminding me, with the drumming!

[ - ] TheRealBuddha 2 points 1.9 yearsJun 23, 2023 20:40:22 ago (+2/-0)

Yeah, I don't practice drumming nearly enough. I do try to get at least a couple of hours in - all in one session - every week, but I don't always make the time to do so. I only have so much time. I can run scales and watch something at the same time. I can't do that while drumming.

I'd probably practice more if I had a decent electronic kit. That way I don't have to put in ear plugs and disturb the house. Even with my studio clad in sound-deadening materials, you can still hear my drumming from anywhere else in the house. The studio/music room is rather centrally located. So, you can't even go to one end of the house to avoid it.

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 3 points 1.9 yearsJun 23, 2023 20:42:40 ago (+3/-0)

I was thinking that not having enough time might be what keeps you from playing the drums as often. I am lucky if I play my drums once a month! Usually the only time I play them is when someone else is here and I am jamming along with them on drums while they are playing guitar

[ - ] TheRealBuddha 3 points 1.9 yearsJun 23, 2023 20:44:58 ago (+3/-0)

Oh, no... Not that long. I might skip a week here and there, but I tend to do so every week. Hell, I probably make up for those missed weeks by sometimes spending longer on the throne than just my mandatory two hours. I really enjoy drumming, so I can get pretty lost in the moment.

If I had infinite time, I'd practice much more regularly.

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 2 points 1.9 yearsJun 23, 2023 21:16:56 ago (+2/-0)

I find drumming without someone to play along with I get bored and go grab a guitar or sit at the piano in a short while

[ - ] TheRealBuddha 2 points 1.9 yearsJun 23, 2023 21:19:55 ago (+2/-0)

I can drum solo for hours, or until my arms are numb.

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 3 points 1.9 yearsJun 23, 2023 21:27:09 ago (+3/-0)

I used to do that. When I was 3 and 4 years old and my brother and neighbor kid got made into a band by my dad. There was one song in the set that I was supposed to do a four measure drum solo, I would play a ten or fifteen minute drum solo instead! I would just let it rip and bang the ever living fuck out of the drums. I started taking drum lessons right after I turned one year old so I was a drum prodigy as I practiced a lot and my dad and my drum teacher would make me do it right. Every time when the set was done I would get yelled at, 'why the hell did you play that drum solo for so long! and others said 'I thought it was never going to end!' and my mom and dad would 'be don't you ever do that again!' all pissed off. LoL The next show I did it again, only longer! LoL I did it every time we had a show! They would be sternly lecturing me before the shows, do not go off and play that long damned drum solo again, do not do it! No matter what, do not do the extra long drum solo! You will be grounded for a week! Big trouble little boy! DO NOT DO THE DRUM SOLO FOR LONGER THAN WE PRACTICE IT!!! DO NOT DO IT!!' Then when it came to that song, the looks I got as it got near the solo section LoL. I did it anyways. I would just lose myself in the drums and it was like nothing in the world existed at the time. Bliss.

Pretty cool stuff! Is that an electronic kit drum or do you have some stuff I haven't seen yet? It sounds like it is fun to play.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha 3 points 1.9 yearsJun 23, 2023 20:58:04 ago (+3/-0)

No, no... That's a real drum kit.

I am kinda planning on getting an electronic kit one of these days... When I get around to it... I'm hoping it will make me practice more.

Thanks for listening. We had a recording error that meant it got cut off at the end. There was like another minute or two that have been lost to history.

[ - ] popticalillusion 3 points 1.9 yearsJun 23, 2023 21:16:59 ago (+3/-0)

Oh, wow! You must have it setup really nice for recording then. Great playing BTW!

The kids had Band Hero and I always had to be the drummer. I had given my gear to the boy, who did the guitar on the game really well, but he didn't play it or maintain it. (My back story comes out bit by bit. LOL)

[ - ] TheRealBuddha 3 points 1.9 yearsJun 23, 2023 21:21:06 ago (+3/-0)

I actually have a better kit, and better recording setup, in VA.

I figure playing band games would be better spent learning the actual instruments.

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 2 points 1.9 yearsJun 23, 2023 21:28:48 ago (+2/-0)

The drums in VA do sound better than these

[ - ] TheRealBuddha 2 points 1.9 yearsJun 23, 2023 21:41:36 ago (+2/-0)

They do. They're a much nicer kit. The kit I have here is a bunch of different shit cobbled together. I have bits and pieces that go all the way back to the 70s. Well, maybe the 80s...

But, it's mine and I know it very well. I have thousands of hours in my drum throne, seated behind that kit. I did splurge and bought a new throne. That was like 2019 or something like that.

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 2 points 1.9 yearsJun 23, 2023 21:42:29 ago (+2/-0)

I should get a drum throne. I just have a chair

[ - ] popticalillusion 2 points 1.9 yearsJun 23, 2023 22:09:35 ago (+2/-0)

Oh, I agree. Playing the real stuff would have been more ideal. They were young then and I was encouraging them to play some music. My daughter, the singer in our Rock Band, went on to join the choir throughout school and sings all the time. The boy doesn't do anything in music, but at least learned to appreciate good music and see how it's played live. They used to attend practice with me and get to see the whole set-up and how we put the songs together.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha 2 points 1.9 yearsJun 23, 2023 22:34:45 ago (+2/-0)

My kids didn't do much with music, but my son practices guitar once in a while and my daughter has a real piano in her house that she plays when she has time. So, I guess I did okay.

In fact, my son has been on stage with me a number of times and I used to sometimes take my daughter to the places I was performing due to a lack of babysitter money. So, she's sung on stage at a very early age. Fortunately, that period of my life was fairly brief. I was still poor, I was just less poor.

[ - ] TheViciousMrPim 1 point 1.9 yearsJun 23, 2023 20:23:14 ago (+1/-0)

I don't think you have been cleared by security sir. If I could get you to stand over here for a minute til we could get this cleared up. We have a lot of problems w people breeching security you see.

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 0 points 1.9 yearsJun 23, 2023 20:25:50 ago (+0/-0)

ummm, no

[ - ] TheViciousMrPim 1 point 1.9 yearsJun 23, 2023 20:27:25 ago (+1/-0)

Sir. I'm gonna have to insist. You can't just wander around back stage. We have rules

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 2 points 1.9 yearsJun 23, 2023 20:31:58 ago (+2/-0)

Fuck you! I'm a Rock Star!

[ - ] popticalillusion 2 points 1.9 yearsJun 23, 2023 21:02:16 ago (+2/-0)

That's right bro! I like that song! Well, I'm actually in rock rehab right now trying to get the coordination and technique better, to fight against the nerve problems. You don't get the same perks at this stage in playing. LOL

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 1 point 1.9 yearsJun 23, 2023 21:12:07 ago (+1/-0)

Hope you get your ailments resolved and can put that behind you, if not, at least try to make the best of what you got!

[ - ] popticalillusion 1 point 1.9 yearsJun 23, 2023 21:55:54 ago (+1/-0)

Now that it doesn't hurt so much playing, and I have the gear back and fixed, I'm just making the best of the situation. I think playing live is out, due to the length of time I would have to be up there playing. Listening to you all, doing a little archiving, and some recording is pretty fun, so I think this is where I'm going to be for a while. Plus I have my Internet radio and interactions with the rock stars on twitter. TheRealBuddha has some great skills and I always get inspired by listening to everyone else play too.

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 1 point 1.9 yearsJun 23, 2023 21:57:04 ago (+1/-0)

Thats cool. Sounds like you're making the best of it!

[ - ] popticalillusion 1 point 1.9 yearsJun 23, 2023 20:44:25 ago (+1/-0)

I didn't get all the editing finished, but I wanted to share the progress as of today.Free All Right Now. I got the microphone and the guitar working, and even learned how to eliminate the amp buzzzz that is so annoying. I should be able to replace the solo guitar part later and sync the tracks better.

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 1 point 1.9 yearsJun 23, 2023 21:19:03 ago (+1/-0)

Sounds all right, you need to turn your guitar up! I want to hear it more

[ - ] popticalillusion 1 point 1.9 yearsJun 23, 2023 21:40:06 ago (+1/-0)

Which part? When I fix the mid section, I can mix them up a bit louder. I got fancy and used both amps, and the neck and bridge pickups for the 4 rhythm tracks.

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 0 points 1.9 yearsJun 23, 2023 21:41:55 ago (+0/-0)

Im not sure, the guitar part LoL I dont know

[ - ] popticalillusion 1 point 1.9 yearsJun 23, 2023 22:00:32 ago (+1/-0)

All right. I really appreciate the input for the next time I mix it. The hearing aids aren't perfect, but it would sound way worse if I wasn't wearing them. LOL

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 0 points 1.9 yearsJun 23, 2023 22:16:53 ago (+0/-0)

You're welcome. I wish could be more help

I must have missed this song over the weekend. The Beatles is one of my favorites. I really need to break out my digital Complete Beatles Songbook and learn a few of them songs. We actually covered a few in my longest running band, but I had to learn them from the other guitar player and they were more like an interpretation of their songs. LOL

[ - ] popticalillusion 1 point 1.9 yearsJun 24, 2023 23:33:23 ago (+1/-0)

I have a much better version of All Right Now ready to go now. My recording program crapped out, so I had to learn some basics on the new program I am switching to. <-This is why the first version wasn't as good.

[ - ] Sleazy [op] 2 points 1.9 yearsJun 25, 2023 00:34:43 ago (+2/-0)

I can hear the guitar now. Nice job. sounds good. I love the tone of your guitar

[ - ] popticalillusion 1 point 1.9 yearsJun 25, 2023 01:26:38 ago (+1/-0)

Thanks! It's a mix of a relatively clean sound on the practice amp using open chords, and some tube distortion on the main amp using the bar chords.

It looks like I'll be using Cakewalk from Bandlab to record now. I haven't figured out how to get the tracks in sync better, but you heard the mess Audacity helped me create by giving me such a hard time. I was able to fix the mid section, but the end is out of sync a bit.

[ - ] popticalillusion 0 points 1.9 yearsJun 26, 2023 19:55:27 ago (+0/-0)

I think I have Cakewalk figured out now and was able to add some chorus effect and fix some more out of sync tracks at the end of the song. I'm hoping to get this next one finished before Friday, or before I move out of the hotel.
