The first assisted living home officially licensed in the US opened in 1988. I can only speak from the point of view of a man who grew up with an absentee father (I suspect my boys are more adequately prepared than I was) and the degree to which fatherhood opens one's heart to the world cannot be anticipated by one who is not already at least tangentially familiar with the terrain.
I permit the possibility that, somewhere out there, within the broad spectrum of human experience, that there could be an individual who manifests a type of dysfunction that is similar to what you have described (people can be weird, after all) and actual fatherhood as experienced by a non-sociopathic man will be a markedly different experience.
The primary axis being entirely inverse of that which you put forth; "I earned this accolade and can therefore pat myself on the back". A healthy experience of fatherhood will manifest as the polar opposite; "I experienced the joy of being of service to others".

Perhaps I should try to address the "dysfunctional need" thing head-on: I didn't want to be a father in the first place.
When I told her as much, Mrs. (then Ms.) Fascinus told me that she wanted a family and that was a deal-breaker for her. She was (and remains) a deal that could not be broken. I therefore decided to trust her enough that we would make it work.
In a similar manner to how the love of a good woman will open a man's heart, the love of a child will likewise do more so.
The personal growth that sprung from that particular well was not something I had any cause to anticipate.
The point of all this is to try to help you see that there was no end-result I had envisioned, other than potentially introducing discord into an ideal relationship.
I entered into fatherhood somewhat reluctantly, though hopefully optimistic. Over time, my position on the matter moved from "don't want any" to "Kids are awesome! How many can we have?".
Because I wifed her young, the answer turned out to be "a lot".
As to the whole burden thing, you're also missing the mark. Society requires hard-working people to carry on. In this manner, we are net contributors.
A lot less than you might imagine. We've still got a ways to go in our journey toward self-sufficiency and a substantial portion of what we don't grow, or otherwise produce, on our own is procured locally.
What about the benefits of joy to humanity? There is a saying, "The rising tide lifts all boats" that some apply toward the state of our collective unconscious. Even if you put no stock into this notion personally, surely you can permit the possibility of folks coming into contact with kind people making their day better in some way.
