A buddy of mine got me all excited about Gyro planes. It looks like a bath tub with a helicopter propeller. He had a 2 seat version that he had built, and he took me for about a dozen rides. We once went all the way from Austin to an airport in Galveston on a tank of gas.

He ended up getting killed in a crash about two years ago. Remember that Huey from the movie DieHard that the FBI guys were flying around in? He was in that Huey when the pilot hit a power line. Killed everyone on the thing.

His wife sold his gyro to a fella, and he crashed and died too. Those events pretty much took care of my interest in flying.

Plane was a Wittman Buttercup a high wing tail dragger. He may have over stressed the airframe causing the inflight breakup.
