It's a sunspot. The sun has a 9-13 year sunspot cycle. There are plenty of sunspots much bigger than the Earth pretty much all the time. Sunspots are areas where electric currents/magnetic fields enter and exit the photosphere, causing unstable areas in the corona above and around them. The dark black cores of sunspots are called umbra.

The when you look at the sun on the horizon at sunset, it is tiny compared to the horizon of the Earth.
