Sorry bro but both are shit no matter what super secret info you might think you have. It's just the way the design works, which I'm going to guess you don't know as much about as you think you do. Both are inherently flawed. Toyta has come up with a neat idea to make CVTs last longer by putting in a normal first gear and then switching to the CVT once you hit around 25mph, but CVTs will never be durable without some kind of future material that doesn't currently exist.
Subaru using chains for their CVTs just makes them last a little longer than they did before. They still aren't anywhere near as durable as a traditional gearbox.
You didn't address the headgasket issue, so I presume you have found it is no longer a plague.
As for the CVT, your claim was that it is shit. Your claim was not that it was less reliable than a standard. If your claim was that I would not have brought it up. But as it stands the CVT is enjoyable to operate during commutes CVT vehicles get about 40% better mpg than their manual versions. Preliminary research shows that a Crosstrek's CVT typically lasts over 200,000 miles. And that is presumably with the SOA maintenance schedule of "lifetime" CVT fluid (an idiotic idea, Japan, Europe, Australia recommend replacement)
I didn't bring up the headgaskets because I'm not as much an expert on the boxer engine as I am on CVTs and can't go into heavy detail like I can with CVTs. What I can tell you is I've seen plenty of Subarus with blown headgaskets and many of them were newer than 2003.
The CVT is shit because it is not as reliable as standard and can't be repaired when they break because when they break they become self contained shrapnel bombs. There is literally no difference in what I said there and what you think I said. The claim is that they are shit and then I gave details as to why they are shit.
I testdrove a 2019 crosstrek about 3 years ago and I hated it. Worse acceleration than just about any vehicle I've ever owned. I'm glad I went with my Elantra GT instead even if I am a little paranoid about the GDI engine. Better MPG is just about the only advantage to a CVT and it's not worth it. Supposedly they are under the most strain at low speeds so maybe the Toyota solution can make me not hate them, but it's going to be a few more years before we see how long those last.
