I've had a 25' Zutano that produced a couple bushels each year. All of those are worth trying if you get the chance. Probably not many non-Hass avocados make it out of California though.

Speaking of Tasmania, is the wiki telling the truth when it claims Tasmania gets "up to 7 hours of sunlight per day" in the north, and a little over half that in the south?
Someone here said they want to move there, so I did some google streetview exploring. Seems the northeast side is the most livable, but being mostly in darkness would be a deal killer.

Not sure. While it has stunning natural scenery in parts it is a gloomy place and it often rains and is overcast a lot. If you like wintry conditions and sitting around a fire it's the place for you but SEAus is the place for me:
People seem a bit hairy though. Link breaks, so copy and 'goto'.
Language differences and bizarre practices like celcius and metric would be too weird. Still remember that old guy describing the 10 year old who drowned saving his brother a while back as an anal sex enthusiast on national television. "The poor little bugger..."
Cut a yellow papaya called pawpaw here - not red papaya which has a lot more sugar - in half, scoop out the seeds fill the hollow with the avocado mass then feed yr face .. I have started this way virtually every day for about 40 yrs, I feel fine ..
Hmm, an actual pawpaw has seeds the same size as Cherimoya, although the exterior is very different. Similar 'custard' type flesh inside, with big seeds distributed throughout.
Sounds like an interesting breakfast. I'm not quite imagining the flavor you'd get from a papaya/avocado combo. For some reason it's reminding me of a fruit from the farmers market. Size of an avo, very thin green skin, with huge white seeds (2") in a pale green sweetish avo-type flesh.
Yes you are correct, the American pawpaw is an indigenous fruit a relative of the Custard Apple that has been favored within the NA community since forever, not withstanding all of that there is no sign the designation pawpaw for papaya is gonna change here in Australia.
It may seem that way because it's a vestige from the era of giant mammals. It's specifically adapted to be eaten by them, allowing the pit to pass through and be seeded elsewhere. The main reason it hasn't followed them into extinction is because humans cultivate it.
An old friend old fruit (plural old fruits) (Britain, slang, dated, sometimes as a term of address) An old friend; an old chap or fellow.[Library Service]
We can only get Haas avocados and Florida avocados. Florida avocados are about three times the size of haas avocados, but they're pretty bland by comparison. Fine for guacamole since you're adding all the other stuff, but not great when you just want to have it with just a little salt.
I used to get these huge ones (about the size of a softball) from the flea markets in Jacksonville. The flavor wasn't as intense as Hass, but the price and quantity more than made up for the difference.
Are you talking about the ones that you check the ripeness by shaking them?
Accurate article. You check the fruit for ripeness by shaking and feeling for the loose pit inside, otherwise, it will seem watery and rot quickly. I find it helps if the stem is still attached.
If you ever find yourself in Florida, check around for flea or farmer's markets (usually the former will have what you're looking for, and typically Friday through Sunday afternoon); you can find all manner of produce you wouldn't elsewhere: sugar cane, rambutan, various herbs (usually excess harvested for restaurants), starfruit, lychee, bitter melon, and God only knows what else -- and of course the standard fare you would in grocery stores, just picked closer to ripe and not fit for shipping long-distance. Go just around noon on Sunday and a lot of vendors will offer you deep discounts just to take the bulk off their hands; it's a good way to experiment without breaking the bank (and also some of the healthiest eating.)
If you ever encounter any produce you don't recognize, feel free to ask me how to prepare/serve it; I've probably dealt with it before.
Summer nights are around 54 F for up to a half mile inland, so local tropical fruit isn't a thing. That sounds pretty great, aside from the sweating part. Just a couple fruit people at the farmers market. Did get a yellow fruit from some kind of cactus with an amazing flavor last year, and saved a bunch of seeds I need to get started ASAP.

They get up to 13 inches? That is huge. Their flesh sounds similar to the low fat content of the non-Hass varieties in California.
