How did Tina Turner become famous with her hoarse voice?

I can't stand Tina Turner's annoying hoarse voice. I am wondering how did she became famous? I can't listen to her songs even for free.

Tina had her husband Ike managing the gigs, she showed up and probably brought energy, people will pay to get someones energy and see a show.

As for actual talent, Cher started driving the "auto tune" revolution and we probably haven't heard a mainstream artist sing normally in years. I just read up about it, they have been tuning their voices for singing with software for the last twenty years.

I guess if they do all the other people/stuff to sell their voices nowadays, there is no need for actual skill, just personal drive and contacts is required.

That saying 'if you want it bad it enough' can often be interpreted as selling your soul and faking it.

You don't know shit about music. Lots of artists have hoarse or raspy voices. Stevie Ray Vaughan, for example, had a voice that could be described as hoarse. There's a certain beauty in that if done right. Kind of like an unpolished gem stone. It doesn't fit everywhere, but most people can hear it for what it is when it does fit.

When you play an instrument so well, singing really is optional and if you can muster up some sort of an honest voice that doesn't steal from the music, it works!

When Turner was making records songs showed up on radio top ten or top 100. The problem is, kids never bought records until they heard the song a number of times on the radio.

So yeah, the system was rigged to make kids think the music they heard was their choice and it never was.

I won’t say Im a big fan but I don’t hate her voice, as far as nigger singers go. I thought she was kinda good in that mad max movie. She does have a growly gravelly sound which is interesting, maybe some would say sexy.

Yeah I just re-listened to a couple of those and they are good. Im trying not to listen to nigger music these days but some of theose songs are quite addictive. Her singing style is very “black” but she is one of the better vocalists of that style and the engineering and musicianship of some of the songs was just excellent.
