I'm an idiot and I'm completely disappointed in myself. I had my first accidental firearm discharge today... and inside the damn house no less.

submitted by iThinkiShitYourself to Guns 1 yearApr 6, 2023 14:19:11 ago (+39/-0)     (Guns)

Fortunately no one was home but me. But I put all the guns in the safe to put myself on a timeout and I stop playing with them when I don't intend to use them.

I need everyone to make sure I know how stupid I am.

With some more time and negligence, you’ll make a great movie set armorer.

This is why gun control is do important.

Always be in control. Of your guns.

You might as well explain how it happened for bonus idiot points.

Aaaalright. It was dumber than you think. I like playing around with my guns at my desk and I went to grab my pistol, and I forgot an hour prior I put the loaded mag in it and set it down. I went over to grab it and I racked the slide and pulled the trigger right away, thinking it was empty. I mean, keeping it pointed in a safe direction saved me because I always do that, but just having it go off was bad.

I had Remington hollow points in it, so it didn't go through the wall.

Yeah, eating were ringing for hours and that was probably the worst part. I want to protect my senses.

Thats pretty fucking stupid. Always assume its loaded and that can never happen. Also get some snap caps.

This is the gayest thing ive read in a long time. They are just tools. Accidents happen, and there are safe practices to prevent those accidents. But to say you HATE guns? You sound like a woman.

Overly emotional. Hates an inanimate object. Woman confirmed.

You don't use tools do you?

Never handle guns "administratively", whatever that means. Do you mean, "dont play with guns"? Getting to know your firearm is important. That requires handling it.

[ - ] gardella 19 points 1 yearApr 6, 2023 15:44:13 ago (+19/-0)

No such thing as "accidental", this was a negligent discharge.
Guns are not toys.

RULE 1
ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

The only exception to this occurs when one has a weapon in his hands and he has personally unloaded it for checking. As soon as he puts it down, Rule 1 applies again.
RULE 2
NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY

You may not wish to destroy it, but you must be clear in your mind that you are quite ready to if you let that muzzle cover the target. To allow a firearm to point at another human being is a deadly threat, and should always be treated as such.
RULE 3
KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER TIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

This we call the Golden Rule because its violation is responsible for about 80 percent of the firearms disasters we read about.
RULE 4
BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET

You never shoot at anything until you have positively identified it. You never fire at a shadow, or a sound, or a suspected presence. You shoot only when you know absolutely what you are shooting at and what is beyond it.

[ - ] GuyWhite 9 points 1 yearApr 6, 2023 17:06:43 ago (+9/-0)

Yes there are accidental discharges. I had a firearm discharge when I changed the safety from safe to fire. Turns out the rifle was defective and the manufacturer ended up paying dearly after many more folks had the same experience.

I always obey the rule about not pointing the muzzle at anything that I did not want to shoot. This saved me and others..the bullet went into the ground.

Oh, and the gunsmith knew just how to fix the problem…from experience.

[ - ] i_scream_trucks -2 points 1 yearApr 6, 2023 22:13:19 ago (+0/-2)

No there aren't. Loaded chambered and trigger pulled isn't an accident it's fucking stupidity.

"And the gunsmith knew how to fix it from experience"

Ask him if he has ever had an "accidental discharge" from a "defective weapon" or realised from experience it was dangerously defective before he loaded it, chambered a round, turned off the safety, and put a finger on the trigger. You probably won't like the answer.

[ - ] GuyWhite 4 points 1 yearApr 6, 2023 23:05:40 ago (+4/-0)

No shit head. Trigger was not pulled when it went off. I was hunting. In order to clear a round to make the rifle safe, the safety had to be in the fire position or else the bolt would be locked. In the safe position, the bolt was locked closed and couldn’t be opened to extract a round. I moved the safety to fire and I had a discharge.

No stupid, the gunsmith fixes those problems with other people’s guns. He does not have to personally experience the problem to fix it.

Ok, you can stick your head back up your ass again. I’m done.

BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT'S BEYOND IT

It deserves more than a footnote in your explanation. Pass through is a killer.

[ - ] i_scream_trucks 0 points 1 yearApr 6, 2023 22:20:30 ago (+0/-0)

It's not pass through but doing pistol training here, putting a round anywhere other than in the keyhole is called a "granny" and an instant fail.

Because you just missed the centre of the seen mass and shot grandma instead.

But then again we get taught about "vicarious liability" too. If your weapon gets stolen and used in a crime and you can't explain why someone else had easy enough access to it you get charged with a crime too. I have no issue with that personally.

We have trainers that will demonstrate it by having students holster an unloaded pistol with the strap undone and will walk behind us on the firing line and pull one from the holster. Literally last time I trained a few years back finished off the session and the first fucking thing me and another guy came across was a cop leaning across the counter waiting for his lunch at Macca's. Like it or not you absolutely can unstrap and pull a weapon from someone who isnt paying the least bit of attention from behind if you're quick enough. By habit now if I'm doing anything with tools on a belt Ive still usually got my elbows on it and I haven't touched that shit for years.

[ - ] JudyStroyer 1 point 1 yearApr 7, 2023 08:31:01 ago (+1/-0)

You dont ever "play around" with guns stupid nigger. Hopefully you learned from your error. How fucking old are you by chance? Also, you said that since it was a hollow point it didnt go through a wall, which is retarded on its face for anyone that has any experience whatsoever. Hollow points only expand from hydraulic pressure. Wood, or anything not fluid, will not provide this pressure, the wood fills the hole, and now you have a fmj essentially. Would you believe it if I told you a 9mm hollowpoint will travel through more walls than a 5.56 fmj? Because that is a fact. Dont play with your guns. You are a complete retard when it comes to them.

[ - ] Love240 0 points 1 yearApr 7, 2023 06:38:58 ago (+0/-0)

No, you need to enjoy them in a safe manner.

If you're becoming that forgetful you may want to have a set aside place that firearm manipulations are performed, and only there.

You ALWAYS assume a gun is loaded. If I watch you remove the clip, show me it's empty, rack the gun and hand it to me I'm going to pop the magazine, ensure that it's empty, and rack that gun and look in the chamber. Because I'm gonna assume it's loaded.

[ - ] i_scream_trucks 1 point 1 yearApr 6, 2023 22:25:51 ago (+1/-0)*

This is why I reckon that Baldwin incident was grade a horseshit. He's had firearms training before if he has done movies with guns. If he has been trained properly it's ultimately on him for not checking loaded or not, what it was loaded with, not pointing it where it shouldn't be pointed and not pulling a trigger without the first three things being done. Ultimately the manslaughter is on him and not the armourer.

"Herp derp prop gun" - prop guns don't shoot projectiles. I could be wrong but as far as I'm aware a prop gun is a completely non functional replica used for the pointing at things when not due to be fired and has no mechanism for either going bang or producing smoke. When a scene calls for someone to pull a trigger, something to go bang, and smoke to appear it becomes a controlled live range.

Over here even that is classed as a controlled weapon. S&W training aids are weighted correctly and aside from the colour (bright orange) look the part but have no moving parts and are for holster/reholster and stance drills and are STILL trated as seriously as a fully functional gun by a decent range master. If you fuck around with one of them you'll get thrown out of the range and banned from returning.

By all accounts everyone on that set was high as balls to begin with anyway and should never have been fucking around with that shit.

Aussies will remember a cop TV show called "Blue Heelers" - the schools scenes in it were actually filmed at real schools (Mt Thomas High School was my High School, a lot of the house call scenes were filmed locally) their uniforms and weapons were all very legitimate replicas, all of which had to go back to an armourer when a scene was finished, if anything called for a gun to be pulled then the extras used as school kids (me once! A group of us had to chant BURN BABY BURN for a car fire scene) were replaced by paid actors and the bang bangs were never filmed on location.

Will say one of my best memories of high school was being on the back oval standing about 20ft behind Lisa McCune bending over doing stretches... Still got an autograph or two somewhere...

Manipulate the action, remove the magazine, load a round into the magazine, reinsert magazine. Much safer.

"Semis are soooo much better" was a marketing tool gone too far. The worst fail with a revolver is a reload, if it still doesn't fire your firing pin is buggered and you're fucked, gtfo, vs field stripping a semi auto from cover, hoping that fixes it, THEN gtfo'ing.

As long as you know you fucked up...

I rack the slide over and over again out of paranoia and look inside the chamber each time

One time though I had a 223 round fall from my kitchen cabinet by the stove where I was cooking

Didn't discharge the round actually but it made a loud pop and the case split

Not sure what a round was doing there but that was pretty stupid too

I've only had one accidental discharge, ever, with a gun in the house. It was shortly after I turned 21 while I was cleaning my guns that I had taken to the range. I followed a bunch of safety protocols and the gun was sitting on a table pointed at a wall, so one was hurt. Just my pride and a hole in the side of a brick wall that I was made to patch up and fix by myself as punishment. The way that I see it, everybody gets ONE. If you don't learn and respect the weapon, and then have another discharge, don't keep guns.

[ - ] MaryXmas 0 points 1 yearApr 6, 2023 22:54:06 ago (+0/-0)

No. Unnaceptable. One accidental discharge? Are you fucking crazy? 0. You get 0. Because your wife might be in the next room. Or the guy from next door, returning your leaf blower. You get 0 mistakes. If you make mistakes, you need to go back to bb guns till you don't.

No such thing as an accidental discharge. If it's gone off it's loaded and a finger is on the trigger.

[ - ] Moravian 0 points 1 yearApr 6, 2023 21:56:55 ago (+0/-0)

This is what I learned:

THE VITAL FOUR "ACTS" OF FIREARMS SAFETY
Assume every firearm is loaded.
Control the muzzle direction at all times.
Trigger finger must be kept off the trigger and out of the trigger guard.
See that the firearm is unloaded - PROVE it safe.

And:

"PROVE"
Point the firearm in the safest available direction.
Remove all cartridges.
Observe the chamber.
Verify the feeding path.
Examine the bore.
