I was working as a cashier at the time. More people were asking me if I had any to give them as change, than were using them to buy anything. A lot of those coins are probably sitting in a jar or drawer in peoples' houses because they picked them up as a novelty at release.
Nobody wants to carry around a bunch of heavy coins that you'd have to spend multiples of to buy something with.
Tell that to Britain. They convinced em to get rid of notes for £1 and switch to a coin. Seems like that was the intent of this dollar coin, but no dollar coin has managed to do well. People in the US prefer notes
