I think that now the percentage of tips you receive on your credit card customers is supposed to roughly equal the percentage of tips you receive from your cash customers. Much easier for the IRS with the credit cards to reference.

Waiters can make good money in tips, and a lot of those tips are in cash and go unreported. I knew people who served in busy restaurants and were making $50/hr or more, most of which was cash in their pockets.

Also you have zero idea how stressful a fast paced customer service job can be, especially when it comes to something such as food. Waiters deal with the brunt force of hungry, grumpy self centered people all day. Me personally, I tip based on how much real estate my party took up and how busy the place was. If I bring ten people to an empty restaurant, they 10%. I wasn't holding up any other business. If it's me and the Wife and the place is packed with a waiting list, 15-25% depending on the service.

Food service is the single largest employment sector of all industries. Those people have children to raise and deserve a decent income for putting up with pricks like you.

Restaurants often give free service when the experience is particularly bad for a specific customer. Why shouldn't they get extra compensation when the customer feels they provided excellent service?
