There was a young guy, probably about twenty or so who was working as a cashier at a gas station. This older man came in and asked him why the fuck he was working a dead end shitjob. This old man offered this kid a job on his crew doing HVAC. Now this kid lives the life. He bought a house, has all the toys, etc etc. That old man is a close friend of mine.

I sometimes see white kids in dead end jobs who are legitimately working hard at them. I watch for quite awhile so that I can assess their character. Then I approach them with an opportunity and explain the process of improving their lifestyle through a career that I am uniquely qualified to get them started in.

Tell them they're doing a great job.

Is a White cashier a rare event? Browns are not necessarily too bad, but think about your physical safety if you're in a negro habitat.

To give the cashier a boost while not being creepy, just be pleasant and lightly engaging. You're one of up to hundreds of people they have to interact with that day. Not all of them are wanting an emotional connection with each customer they have to process. Be easy to handle with maybe some light pleasantries that don't demand a connection.

Sadly almost any attempt at conversation by an older guy with a younger female is going to be construed as some sort of inappropriate creeping. I've been behind the nicest white haired dude who is making no doubt the same jokes he's been making for the past 20 years, but when he's gone the chicks behind the counter roll their eyes and make disparaging remarks.

On occasion the comments made by the old guy smack of sexism (by today's standards, but totally par for the course in the 50s or 60s) but not very often.

Usually the guy is just trying to be friendly. I know because sometimes I am that guy too. On occasion I can't help myself and I'll make some wisecrack or tired old joke, but I'm not fooling myself that the smiles I get in reply are anything but condescending and weary patience.

Sometimes it's also painfully clear that he's lonely and just hoping for some human interaction, which is sad. But TBH old ladies do it too and can be far worse, and by worse I mean they don't want to leave and are holding up the line. Ask any young male bank teller.

Say and do whatever the fuck you want, man, and power to you. But be aware that the chance you will be perceived as anything but just another creepy old sexist white guy is pretty small regardless of the setting.

And an old guy attempting to tell someone of a younger generation anything about racism is going to be met with immediate dismissal. I mean what do old fucks know about the racism, especially since by definition you are all racists.

There is no reasoning with that sort of thinking so save yourself the frustration of trying. After all racism is nothing more or less than race realism, and what could be wrong with that? But try and have that discussion with a millenial and see where it gets you.

I tell these young white males constantly if theyre doing a good job in construction. Most of them do care about the quality of their work. Seeing hvac, electrical, plumbing doing a good job, i say it.
