Can you do that? I thought they would only pay as much as the damages. So even if you had more insurance, nominally, you'd only be reimbursed up to the value of the house, with their option to repair it as well.
Actually, my neighbors house burned almost to the ground, and they had a fight with their insurance about repair vs rebuilding. They eventually only left the front façade of the house intact, while the entire structure had to be rebuilt. I suppose that was the compromise. Took like a year to rebuild it though.
Another two people that I know, who live next to each other, the one's (giant) tree fell on the other's house. Injured somebody in the house not to mention crushing their roof. They also fought with the insurance a long time about something, IDK what it was but it took them like years to rebuild. Apparently it was determined that the guy who owned the tree didn't have to pay.
It seems it depends on the policy. The policy we have has the value of the house higher than what we bought it for and covers complete rebuilds. Granted, I don't live in Florida or another state that's usually hit by hurricanes.
If the cat lady was the homeowner (haven't seen anything saying if she owned or rented), insurance company and the bank are out of luck.
Ok but you can't collect past what it takes to replace your losses. A rebuild. It's not like you can profit off of it, although I guess a new structure could be worth more than an old one.
If a cat lady lived in a place, I can see burning it being the best option. Don't get me wrong.
Perhaps the college cult victims will kill all their "lesser" identity groups and themselves with the same motivation of the cat lady and depressed nuts who kill their kids and then themselves.

Who knows, maybe landlord / owner insured it for more than it was worth?
