Japan is currently 13. It's just going up. My position, to the extent I get drawn into these suspicious conversations, is that 15 or 16 is as low as it should go - and I'm not going to care if it's 18.

When that is the family situation of much of japan then that isn't a good family situation. An economy is just a statistical measure of everyone's family situation. When we say their declining birthrates aren't good for their economy we aren't saying that some dude in an office will fail to hit some quarterly numbers. We are saying that the average family situation in japan will be unmanageable in practical terms.

No confusion. What I'm saying is that Japan is like most other countries in being vastly overpopulated. They still need 'a' birthrate to maintain continuity, but it needs to be at a sustainable level, not a level that supports the current population.

Look at Tokyo alone. 37 million people in 847 square miles is 16,480/sq mi, in an area that should have no more than thirty to fifty thousand, at most.
