What is the best option for a TV box now?

submitted by GeneralDisarray to tv 1.3 yearsJan 16, 2023 17:08:01 ago (+4/-0)     (tv)

I need a new tv box.

I was looking at what is out their but I want something that will be subscription and ad free that I can just plug in.

I also don't want voice control or anything that spies on me.

I honestly don't know where to start and would appreciate some advice from people that are more savvy than me.

Turn off the fucking tv.

Just don't connect it to the internet.
Anything that spies on you requires your permission by either, plugging in an ethernet cable, or typing in your wifi password.

Wasn't Amazon building some device to behave like a open network community Wi-Fi? So a smart TV could still gain Internet access through one's dumb neighbors. I doubt it is currently a worry, but it probably will be in a few years.

Jeff Bezos is trying to do his equivilant of Starlink. But, his space program is failing miserably, So badly in fact, that he is going to have to buy payloads from SpaceX to get his satellites into orbit if he's going to meet FCC deadlines.

Meanwhile, there could potentially be a Starlink in your TV that could connect without your permission. But, if it's FCC compliant, it would have to be declared. You can't legally sneak in a wireless device into a consumer product.

FCC compliance is a pain in the ass. Those phone calls were tedious. They probably are what turned me into a "Dark Side Libertarian".

I think the fire tv with tuner and DVR is good.

Anything that "just plugs in" from the factory is probably going to spy on you, but you should be able to get someone to build you a media PC

Oh doesn't spy on u. Idk

Probably open source. Find out what XBMC runs on.

Get on ebay. A couple companies make mini PCs for office use. You can find a nice one from $60-$80 sometimes.

Get a wireless mini keyboard mouse combo. Make sure it's backlit unless you never watch tv in the dark.

Then install your goyflix app and Kodi or Plex or the niggerball app and the fox news app. ~$100 and you're all set.

Vero 4K. Pre-built little Kodi box, meaning all the possibilities that entails. Runs warm so don't bury it under things, but mine seems pretty solid.

If you still need local programming, just get an antenna and flip the input on the TV. Or pair it with something like an HDHomeRun that will take the OTA signal and broadcast it to any device on your network (including the Kodi box).

Is it all plug & play? No. But it gives you control and "just works" once everything is setup how you like it.

Whatever you do, do NOT get a Roku. Those little fagots are constantly spamming queries back to their little private domains to record "metrics." And if you block those domains? They spam requests even FASTER (like 20,000 per hour).

You'll have to build that. I learned long ago it isn't worth my time to maintain. XBMC, or whatever they call it now, has "lost it's database" too many times for me to bother. Setting up torrents with RSS is a pain. It costed more in my time than the money savings.

I'm not going to disparage you like I normally would people that still addicted to the electric jew. All I'm going to say is that you don't need TV and you're way better off without one in your house.

I have not had issues with my Vizios. The modern ones explain how they spy on you, for what its worth.

Should be fine if you don't connect to Wi-Fi.

It's hard to find non smart tvs especially because of their deals.

I have heard Sony is doing the best right now. I enjoy Vizio, the one I use I've had for longer than a decade.
