Is there anything to do to help limp a car along that has a bad piston ring?

Thicker oil?

Avoiding a rebuild

Just leave out the oil altogether so that it stops slowing down the crank, and leave those rings off to get rid of all that friction and then it can go infinitely faster!!

There's a point of diminishing returns, although using tighter tolerances and less viscous oil along with thinner rings, also has a point of diminishing returns. Then you have to be more careful with your ring and cylinder finish, piston coatings, and materials you use.
